Seventeen-year-old Hayden Godfrey, a senior at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah, wanted to do something very special for Valentine’s Day this year: So instead of buying a flower just for his girlfriend, he used money he save for nearly a year and a half to purchase flowers for every girl in his school.

Godfrey told ABC News that he wanted to make “as many people as possible” happy this Valentine’s Day. So over the last two years, he took on odd jobs — including being a McDonald’s cook, a dishwasher at a Mexican restaurant, and a grocery bagger — to save enough money (around US$450, or S$628.88) to purchase 900 carnations from an online wholesaler.

On Thursday (Feb 11), Godfrey, along with several friends, then handed out to the flowers to all 834 female students in his school.

“I don’t think anything can compare to seeing every girl in your life holding a flower as they walk through the halls,” Godfrey wrote on Facebook.

His girlfriend and fellow schoolmate, 18-year-old Lilyan Sharp, didn’t seem to mind. She told ABC News that every girl walked out of school with a “giant smile on their face”.

“I myself, spent a lot of Valentine’s Days not receiving anything,” she said. “I know how it feels.”

Godfrey’s mother, Mrs Erin Godfrey, added that her son first got the idea when he was 14, after noticing that some girls didn’t receive anything on the romantic holiday.

“That broke his heart... He wanted every girl to feel joy,” she said.

On his part, the 17-year-old Godfrey said all his efforts “was totally worth it”.
