Abigail: The gang — from left Angus Cloud, Kathryn Newton, Alisha Weir (being carried), Kevin Durand, , Melissa Barrera, William Catlett, and (at the door) Dan Stevens— make an unscheduled house call.

Abigail (M18)

Starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Alisha Weir, Giancarlo Esposito

Directed by  Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett

After two Screams, directing duo Bettinielli and Gillett return to the supernatural sandbox of their 2019 studio breakout Ready or Not, with a heist horror that’s best likened to the unholy love child of From Dusk Till Dawn and Reservoir Dogs. The set-up: a motley crew of shady characters are hired to abduct and babysit a 12-year-old daughter of a mob boss. (Esposito’s involvement as the recruiter echoes another classic thriller that Abigail is spiritually indebted to.) Here’s the thing: the girl (Weir, creepy) has a voracious appetite for blood — she’s a f***ing vampire! It’s fun to watch the ensemble trade backstories and insults (can someone keep track of Stevens’ F-bombs?), and even more fun when they get picked off one by one by the titular monster-in-a-tutu. Lots of yucks and shocks ensue. Don’t dismiss the banter: it drops intel that’ll explain a third act revelation. (3.5/5 stars) Out in cinemas

Suspect (PG13)

Starring Nick Cheung, Patrick Tam, Niki Chow

Directed by Wong Ming Sing

Suspect: Nick Cheung and Liang Yongqi try to stop people from leaving the cinema.

Incongruous and inert whodunit starring Cheung as an ex-cop with a photographic memory (convenient!) recalled to solve a series of killers tied to a video game. Getting in the way of his sleuthing is the dick’s own tortured past: his twin brother was done in by a serial killer! He’s messed up but he’s still allowed to carry a gun. That isn’t the only strange part: the story is set in an unnamed HK-esque city with a retro futuristic vibe (security footage is viewed on a moviola-like machine!). The whole mess feels like it was written (and rewritten) by AI. (2/5 stars) Out in cinemas
