Actress Tasha Low Mourns Passing Of Grandfather, Singapore Ballroom Dancing Legend Sunny Low

In an IG post dedicated to her grandfather, Tasha thanked him for inspiring her to “work on her craft”.

On May 11, local artiste Tasha Low, 28, mourned the passing of her grandfather, local ballroom dancing legend Sunny Low, on her Instagram.

Tasha, who got her start in showbiz as a member of the Singaporean-South Korean girl group Skarf, comes from a family of ballroom dancers.

Her great-grandfather, Low Poh San, is known as "Singapore's Father of Ballroom Dancing" and is often credited as the man who introduced ballroom dancing to Singapore.

Dancing's in his blood

Sunny was an accomplished dancer who won a number of national dance competitions and was a familiar face on TV in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

He also found fame as a dance coach and was the founder of Sunny Low Dance Studio, where he taught many budding dancers over the years, including actress Kimberly Chia, who left a comment expressing her condolences on Tasha’s post.

“I was young then but I never forgot that Uncle Sunny was a very good teacher to me. Rest In Peace, uncle Sunny,” Kimberly wrote.

Rest in peace

In her post, Tasha paid tribute to her grandfather’s love for dance, writing: “Your hard work, perseverance and passion for dance has shone throughout the years and inspired so many individuals to pursue their dreams. As your granddaughter, I have been exposed to all the glitz and glamour you brought to the family and I want to thank you for inspiring me to work on my craft and be a responsible performer, regardless of my age.”

Tasha also recalled going on a "food date" with her grandfather after she returned from Korea, describing it as a memory that's particularly vivid for her.

“On that day, we went to eat your favourite nasi padang, followed by dessert and grocery shopping for your chocolates and snacks. It meant a lot to me as it was the first time we caught up ever since I came back from Korea. I will definitely miss having food dates with you in the future,” she wrote.

“Thank you for always showering us with your love and kisses, and giving all your grandchildren the love we need. I'll miss your hugs and kisses and most importantly, I'll miss you. Rest in peace, Gong Gong,” she added.
