Calvert Tay To Have First On-Screen Kiss In Drama Produced By Dad Zheng Geping

What kissing tips did Geping give his 22-year-old son?

After a five-year break, second-gen celeb Calvert Tay, 22, is set to star in his second drama.

Calvert got his big break back in 2017, when he played Zoe Tay’s son in Mediacorp drama While We Are Young. However, Calvert soon enlisted for National Service following his screen debut.

After his ORD, he turned his focus to music, and has released two songs thus far.

Now, it looks like the young star is ready to return to acting.

In an interview with 8world, Calvert said: “If I don’t do this now, I might not have the chance to do so in the future!”.

This time round, Calvert is starring in meWATCH drama First Of April, which is set to premiere on March 31.

As the title suggests, the drama is related to April Fool’s Day, and will feature three different storylines revolving around pranks. The drama also sees celeb dad Zheng Geping stepping up as the producer.

The cast features a host of young stars, including Sheryl Ang, Bonnie Loo, Zhang Zetong, Zhai Siming and Regene Lim.

Calvert also let on that each of the cast will be playing three different characters.

“After seeing the script, apart from the interesting stories, I can also challenge myself by taking on three different roles, so I told my manager that I want to take this on. It can be considered an opportunity for me to return to acting,” he said.

With filming scheduled to wrap today (Mar 19), it seems like Calvert has already gotten past his biggest hurdle — shooting his very first kiss scene with Regene.

According to Calvert, he’ll have two such scenes with the actress in the drama. The first, he says, is an innocent peck, and the second, a little hotter and heavier.

“We shoot for quite a few hours. A couple of NGs were ‘cos we couldn’t quite capture the emotions [of the scene], then after that, it was the more technical stuff, like lighting and angles,” he said.

So did Calvert seek any advice from his actor dad?

“He only told me not to eat garlic, to drink more water and eat mints. The most important thing is to have confidence, and to interact more with the other party,” revealed Calvert.

Interestingly, though Geping is the producer, father and son have yet to cross paths on set.

However, he did seek acting advice from Geping, as well as his mum, Hong Huifang, at home.

“But they asked me to go through and study the script and character by myself, to develop it on my own ‘cos I would learn more that way,” he said.

As for his future plans, Calvert shares that he hopes to focus on his music career, and take on acting projects whenever the opportunity arises.

“I have not applied to any universities yet, my parents left the final decision up to me. But I will definitely get a degree [one day], this is a promise I made to my grandfather,” he said.

First Of April will be available on March 31 on meWATCH.
