Chinese Actress Qin Hailu Has No Patience For Lazy Actors, Says “No One Dares To Not Memorise Their Scripts” Around Her

Actors who “recite numbers” in place of dialogue, relying on post-production dubbing had better stay away.

Qin Hailu, aka Amanda Qin, 43, has some very high (or should we say basic?) expectations of her co-stars.   The actress, who appeared on a recent episode of Chinese talk show Bu Zhi Yu Ta (Go Beyond Her), revealed that “no actor would dare to not memorise their scripts” as long as she was around. She reportedly would not bother to mask her disdain and said actor would be given a “black face” should he or she even dare try to slack off on the job.   It’s no wonder Hailu clinched more than a handful of awards in her career spanning 23 years, the list of accolades include Best Actress at the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards, Hongkong Film Critics Society Awards and Golden Bauhinia Awards. Besides being recognised for her talent, it’s clear to see how seriously she takes her job and how super professional she is when it comes to being on set.   When asked on the talk show about her reaction towards such actors and rumours of her showing them her “black face”, Hailu did not mince words, saying: “To memorise one’s script is a form of respect. I’m not saying that they have to recite it perfectly, but if the actors themselves are not clear about what they are saying, I don’t think anyone would be happy about that, right?”   “If one doesn’t even understand the script and doesn’t know their script well, I feel that it reflects on principles and basic conduct. It’s something I can’t tolerate,” she added.

Professionalism is key here

Not long ago, rumours were rife in China about certain actors who did not memorise their scripts. Instead, what they did during filming was merely recite numbers (gibberish, then?), and relied on post-production voiceovers to do the job for them. After Hailu expressed that this certain “Miss Numbers” wouldn’t exist in her presence, the topic of such actors immediately made it into one of the top searches online, sparking much discussion among netizens.   After her interview on the talk show, Hailu was praised by many for enforcing high standards. One netizen also recalled how Hailu once said: “These roles and rewards we are fighting over could allow some common folks to live out the rest of their lives!”   Chinese filmmaker Song Zude, who is known for his controversial opinions and public accusations of those in showbiz, also gave his two cents on the situation. He expressed his support for Hailu, adding that many young actors did not memorise their scripts and often got them wrong during filming, which in turn affected everyone on set as they had to redo the scene several times.   He also revealed that he had scolded a good half of the industry because of this, adding to his social media post: “However, there are also a few good actors that I never dared to tell off. These include Chen Daoming, Li Xuejian, Ge You, Hu Ge, Andy Lau and Jacky Cheung.”   Photos: Sinchew News
