The Coconut Club Opening Eastside ‘Casual Canteen’ Outlet With Apom Berkuah & Dry Laksa
There’s also nasi lemak, of course.
Fans of its refined take on nasi lemak would have to trek to the Kampong Glam neighbourhood to sate their craving, but Easties will soon get their own outlet as The Coconut Club is branching out into the East side.
It opens tomorrow
The new outlet opens tomorrow (Jan 30) at Frankel Avenue in the Siglap neighbourhood. According to The Coconut Club’s managing partner Daniel Sia, it is meant to be a “casual canteen concept” with 30 indoor and al-fresco seats.
Breezy resort look
8days.sg had a sneak peek at the Siglap outlet, which we find cosier and more homely than the Beach Road flagship. The space is decked out in soothing green, with rattan chairs and lamps that remind us of a stylish resort.
Other than dine-in service, the outlet will also offer delivery via Oddle and its website for the restaurant’s signatures like Ayam Goreng Berempah Nasi Lemak ($21) with organic French breed chicken. Sides such as Otah ($17) and Satay Ayam Bumbu Kacang ($18) and desserts including kuehs and Chendol ($8) made with TCC’s proprietary hand-squeezed coconut milk are also on the menu. But the Siglap menu is not as extensive as the Beach Road branch, as chef Daniel explains: “It’s a canteen concept that focuses on signatures rather than an extensive menu."
Siglap-exclusive apom berkuah and dry laksa
The Frankel Ave restaurant offers an exclusive brunch menu with dishes like Otah Cheese Sandwich ($18) and Hae Bee Hiam Tuna Sandwich ($18), all served with brioche toast and a salad.
There is also Dry Laksa ($21), served with quail eggs, prawns and a dollop of house-made sambal on the side (toss in the robust spicy sambal and mix thoroughly; we find the laksa bland without it). Do note that the brunch menu is served only on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 5pm (last order is at 4.30pm).
Apom Berkuah with Pengat Pisang, $16
The apom berkuah here is worth ordering. The soft, delicate fermented rice and butterfly pea flower pancakes boast the rich fragrance of good quality coconut milk. It is served with the traditional pairing of pengat pisang (bananas cooked with coconut milk, palm sugar, sago and pandan), plus a scoop of creamy coconut sorbet.
Plant-based Rendang, $28
Also new on the menu — a plant-based rendang with ‘beef’ from Indonesian plant-based meat company Green Rebel. The spice-braised beef chunks are pretty good and taste almost like the real deal, except it has a slightly bouncier texture that we have come to expect from plant-based protein.
The Coconut Club’s Siglap outlet opens Jan 30 at 97 Frankel Ave, S458222. Tel: 8028-3486 (WhatsApp). Open Thur-Mon, 11am-9.30pm (last order at 8.30pm). www.thecoconutclub.sg.
