Constance Wu Shares #MeToo Story In Memoir: She Was Sexually Harassed By Fresh Off The Boat Senior Producer  

Speaking to New York Times to promote her upcoming memoir, Making a Scene, Wu, 40, alleges that during the show’s first season in 2015, the person in question — whom she only refers to by an initial — exhibited controlling behaviours and harassed her.

“Fresh Off the Boat was my first-ever TV show,” Wu told NYT. “I was thrown into this world. I don’t have parents in the industry. And because I was 30, people thought I knew what I was doing. It made me paranoid and embarrassed.”

Fresh Off the Boat was launched in February 2015 and ended its six-season run in 2020.

In the book (via Variety), Wu alleges the producer told her to send him selfies and to run all her business decisions before making them. She also accuses the producer of forcing her to attend a basketball game with him, during which he touched her thigh and grazed her crotch. He then gave her the cold shoulder after she told him to stop.

The Crazy Rich Asians star writes that she and the producer stopped talking after a heated argument over Wu’s decision to not attend an Asian American film festival to give her time to recover from the show’s gruelling shooting schedule. Wu eventually forgave him so that she could move on.

Wu, who shares a two-year daughter with musician partner Ryan Kattner, addressed her #MeToo moment during a panel at the Atlantic Festival, on Friday (Sept 23).

“I kept my mouth shut for a really long time about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I received the first two seasons of the show,” she said. “Because, after the first two seasons, once it was a success, once I was no longer scared of losing my job, that’s when I was able to start saying ‘no’ to the harassment, ‘no’ to the intimidation, from this particular producer. And, so I thought: ‘you know what? I handled it, nobody has to know, I don’t have to stain this Asian American producer’s reputation, I don’t have to stain the reputation of the show.’”

In July, Wu revealed that she attempted suicide in 2019 following the backlash triggered by her tweet she expressed disappointment over Fresh Off the Boat’s renewal.

“I was afraid of coming back on social media because I almost lost my life from it: 3 years ago, when I made careless tweets about the renewal of my TV show, it ignited outrage and internet shaming that got pretty severe,” she wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

Wu’s memoir Making a Scene is out Oct 4. Her next movie, Lyle, Lyle Crocodile, opens in cinemas on Dec 1.
