Desmond Tan Proposed To His Wife 5 Years Ago And Says They Would Have Gotten Married Earlier If Not For The Pandemic

Desmond and his bride had just 15 guests at their “an intimate and simple" wedding in France, but the couple had already held a reception in Singapore with their families last month.

Desmond Tan’s recent wedding announcement may have caught most of us by surprise, but it’s actually been a long time coming.

For those of you who happened to miss the big news, the 35-year-old actor revealed today (Dec 7) that he has finally married his university sweetheart of 12 years in “a fairytale castle wedding” in France.

And they actually got engaged… five years ago. Yup, he lied to us earlier.

“I proposed to her five years ago in a National Park in the USA,” Desmond told 8days.sg in a WhatsApp interview. “It was a quiet winter morning. With the snowy mountains as our backdrop, I got down on one knee and popped the question. I was so nervous. Thankfully, she said, ‘Yes!’”

“I kept it private ‘cos I respect my partner’s privacy,” he went on to explain. “I am very thankful for her patience and after a long engagement, I’m so blessed to call her my wife.”

According to an Instagram post by Desmond’s close friend Noah Naima, who attended the ceremony, the proposal happened in Yosemite National Park in California.

Des' friend also revealed that they were in Laugnac, a commune in south-western France, for the wedding.

As it turns out, COVID-19 had thrown a wrench into Desmond’s plans to tie the knot.

“It would have happened two years ago if not for the sudden pandemic outbreak,” he said. “It has always been our plan to have a destination dream wedding, but we put it on hold ‘cos of the ever-changing uncertainties of the pandemic.”

Then, when the Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) to France was launched in October, Desmond and his wife decided to seize the opportunity to hold their dream wedding overseas.

15 of their close friends joined them on the trip and attended the wedding, which he described as “an intimate and simple one”, but the couple had already held another reception with their families last month.

Aside from the usual exchange of vows, Desmond prepared something a little extra special by presenting a wedding song that he wrote for his wife as a surprise.

In addition, they got their married friends to do a surprise renewal of vows as they “wanted to celebrate love with everyone”.

Needless to say, it was all a very touching affair.

“It has been a long wait for us to finally fulfil this dream. We are both immensely happy and felt so blessed during the wedding, we had tears of joy many times,” he gushed.

Now that the wedding’s done and dusted, Desmond and his wife will be continuing with their road trip-slash-honeymoon in southern France for another week.

Unfortunately for their pals back home, there are no plans to hold a wedding banquet in Singapore due to the “ever-changing rules and uncertainties of COVID-19”.

When we tried to find out more details about his wife, who we hear is (was?) an air stewardess but whose identity he has expertly kept under wraps for so long, all he would say is that the both of them are “very private” about their personal lives and that they” will probably continue to keep it this way”.

As for their plans to start a family: “We shall let nature take its course.”
