Disney+ reveals May premiere for American Born Chinese, featuring Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan

American Born Chinese also stars Daniel Wu, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, and Stephanie Hsu.



Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, the newly-minted Oscar winners of Everything Everywhere All at Once, will reunite in Disney+'s coming-of-age fantasy series, American Born Chinese. 

Set to premiere on May 24, American Born Chinese — based on the 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang and executive produced by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, and Fresh Off the Boat’s Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan — follows teenager Wei Chen (Ben Wang), a child of Chinese immigrants who befriends a foreign exchange student Wei-Chen (Jim Liu) and is drawn into a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

Yeoh, who made history as the first Asian to win Best Actress at the Oscars on Monday (Mar 12), plays Wei-Chen’s unassuming auntie who’s also Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy. Quan, who took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, stars as Freddie Wong, the star of a popular 1990s sitcom.

Besides Yeoh and Quan, the cast also includes Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu (as Sun Wukong, the Monkey King), Ronny Chieng (as Ji Gong the Mad Monk), and another Everything Everywhere All at Once alums, Stephanie Hsu (as Shiji Niangniang, the Goddess of Stones) and James Wong.
