Don Don Donki Launches Made-To-Order Uni, Oyster & Wagyu Beef Sushi Eatery Sen Sen In S’pore

The casual self-service concept was first launched in Hong Kong and Bangkok, and offers sushi sold by the piece from $1 for unagi.

One of the most popular sections at any Don Don Donki store is sushi. Which probably explains why the Japanese discount chain is bringing its made-to-order sushi concept called Sen Sen Sushi to our shores.

The casual in-store eatery was first launched in Hong Kong and Bangkok. The Singapore outlet is located at Don Don Donki’s 14th and latest store at Jurong Point, which opens tomorrow (Nov 17) at 10am.

Made-to-order sushi

Sen Sen Sushi is right at the entrance of the 1,950㎡ store, and has ample seats for dining in. You can also order your sushi packed in takeaway boxes to go.

How it works

Get an order chit from the eatery’s counter and fill in the type of sushi and quantity that you desire.

The sushi is made only upon order, and you can view the available ingredients displayed in chillers at the counter. Once you have submitted your chit, you are handed a buzzer to collect your sushi when it’s ready.

The menu

There are 42 types of sushi sold by the piece here, categorised by Nigiri Sushi, Gunkan and Hoso Maki (thin sushi rolls).

Prices are pretty reasonable, starting from $0.80 for a Tamagoyaki Nigiri, all the way to $6 for A4 Wagyu Beef Nigiri and Otoro & Uni Nigiri and $12 for Fresh Uni.

The mid-range selection includes Chutoro Nigiri ($4/pc), Fresh Salmon Mentaimayo ($2/pc) and Negitoro Maki ($3/roll). There are also intriguing picks like Terimayo Steamed Oyster ($2/pc), Unagi ($1/pc) and Zuwai Kani (Snow Crab Meat, $2/pc).

Sushi sets

If you’re feeling too lazy to choose, there are also sushi sets like Salmon ($6.50 for four pcs) which has aburi, mentaimayo and terimayo salmon sushi, Ebi Trio ($4.50 for 3 pcs) with red shrimp, sweet shrimp and boiled shrimp, and a premium Aburi Zanmai Set ($19.80 for nine pcs) with toppings like fatty tuna, scallop, unagi, snow crab, oyster and a dramatically long strip of anago eel.

The store

The brightly-lit Jurong Point store is spacious, and feels a lot less cramped than Don Don Donki’s other outlets like Clarke Quay Central and Downtown East.

It has the usual sections that you can find at most Donki outlets: Fresh produce, frozen/chilled meat and seafood, snacks, cosmetics, alcohol and a hot and cold deli stocked with ready-to-eat bentos and desserts. We spotted new deli items like crab fried rice and microwaveable oden.

Self-checkout counters

There’s also a row of self-checkout counters, in addition to staffed cashiers, to speed up the payment process.

Don Don Donki Jurong Point opens Nov 17 at 10am. #B1-09 Jurong Point, 1 Jurong West Central 2, S648886. Open daily 9am-11pm. www.dondondonki.com.
