KFC Launching Limited Edition Zi Char-Style Cereal Fried Chicken
Their Chocolate Hazelnut Egg Tart also makes a comeback.
After slathering their fried chook with salted egg yolk and mala sauce, fast food chain KFC is launching another limited edition item on June 28 that’ll intrigue Singaporean hawker food fans: Cereal Chicken.
Back in 2014, they launched a similar-sounding Golden Cereal Crunch Chicken with cereal bits mixed into the crunchy batter.
But this time, the fried chicken is prepared like the popular cereal prawn dish from zi char stalls. Instead of cereal-coated chicken skin, a generous shower of Nestum cereal is sprinkled onto pieces of KFC’s Hot & Crispy chicken, which is marinated with a “special spice seasoning”. The cereal is also wok-fried zi char-style with curry leaves, curry powder, chopped chilli padi and butter.
Appropriately Singaporean, considering that this Cereal Chicken is launched to celebrate National Day on August 9.
8days.sg had a preview tasting of the Cereal Chicken, which is served to us in a little paper-lined basket. The fried chix rests on a pile of dry cereal, with some cereal bits clinging to the craggy skin. We coat our fried chicken thoroughly with cereal and take a huge bite. Cereal crumbs spray everywhere, and the fried chicken skin crunches loudly with a sound that’ll soothe any ASMR video addict.
The chicken is juicy, but much spicier than we expect from KFC’s Hot & Crispy Chicken. It's likely ’cos KFC had loaded their chooks with extra spices for this. Shiok, if you like your KFC (that’s Kentucky Fried Chicken) fiery. The Nestum cereal offers a hint of fragrant crunch, but we find the cereal bits too fine to be truly crunchy, and also too sweet (we prefer the coarser, salty cereal that’s heaped onto zi char cereal prawns, which we could eat by the spoonful by itself). It’s a pity, since the fried curry leaves, curry powder and chilli padi add feisty flavour to the dry cereal mix.
You can also order a Box Meal, which comes with two pieces of Cereal Chicken, two pieces of Hot & Crispy Chicken Tenders, and regular-sized Fries, Whipped Potato, Coleslaw and a Sjora Mango Peach drink.
This hazelnut chocolate-topped Portugeuse-style egg tart, which was introduced last year with KFC’s salted egg yolk Goldspice Chicken for National Day, makes a comeback this year.
KFC is also bringing back their Everyday Wins with KFC lucky draw from July 3 to August 9, with $288,000 worth of prizes up for grabs. This includes a Mercedes-Benz A Class car, $488 cash to be won daily during the contest period, and vouchers for free Whipped Potato as well as discounts for their Cereal Chicken meals, Cheese Fries, and drinks. To participate, you simply have to order a Cereal Chicken meal, or upgrade your drink to a Sjora Mango Peach/ Strawberry Kiwi beverage or Iced Milo. Both dine-in and online orders are valid for the lucky draw.
