Like all its other new ice cream flavours, the Popcorn Caramel series comprise three main types of affordable desserts, all made with the same flavour of soft serve: a Soft Serve Cone ($1), Hot Fudge Sundae ($2) and McFlurry ($3).

If you order the cone, you can also opt to have it in a twist flavour ($1, which combines both McDonald’s regular vanilla soft serve and the Popcorn Caramel one) or a chocolate-coated Chococone ($1.20). New Year’s resolution diet be damned, we ordered all of the three main sweet treats to try, and here’s our verdict.

We were pretty impressed by McDonald’s pandan soft serve earlier this year, and this Popcorn Caramel ice cream is decent too. We like that the soft serve is creamier than the usual vanilla version (and even its limited-edition flavours like Pandan and Hershey’s Chocolate). But truth be told, it doesn’t taste a lot like caramelly, buttery popcorn to us, unlike the pandan soft serve's intense, perfumey flavour. There’s that hint of corn in the Popcorn Caramel soft serve that reminds us of McDonald’s Sweet Corn Cone from 2017, and a bit of caramel fragrance. We could do with a heavier hit, though. Still, we’re impressed by how milky and smooth the ice cream texture is, and for that, it’s a pretty shiok treat.

The same creamy caramel popcorn-flavoured soft serve is dispensed into a plastic cup and drizzled with McDonald’s chocolatey hot fudge sauce. And the warm, viscous chocolate sauce is all we can taste when we shove a spoonful of hot fudge-drenched soft serve into our gob. It overpowers the ice cream's already faint whiff of caramel popcorn flavour. Not our fave lah.

Popcorn Caramel McFlurry, $3 This McFlurry has popcorn caramel ice cream blitzed with crushed Oreos. It sounds like a junky food combination made in heaven, but like the Hot Fudge Sundae, the tame soft serve flavour is lost in the chaos of crunchy, chocolatey cookie crumbs.Bottom line: Popcorn Caramel is one of the most adorable and creative flavours that McDonald’s has offered so far, and we like that the series’ soft serve texture is somehow creamier and more decadent than its regular vanilla ice cream and other flavour series. Its caramel popcorn flavour could be stronger, but it’s still decent soft serve that’s much cheaper than hipster ice cream joints.Available only at McDonald’s dessert kiosks island-wide, while stocks last.PHOTOS: ​​​​​​​YIP JIEYING

While we are still gorging on CNY snacks, McDonald’s Singapore has quietly rolled out its new ice cream series today: Popcorn Caramel. This comes right after the fast food chain released its well-received Pandan ice cream line in January this year.
