Instead of the eatery’s usual cardboard packaging for fries, the salted egg version comes in a fancier covered box, with the dish's name (complete with a cute sketch of a fried egg) artfully emblazoned on it. Upon lifting the lid, we're treated to a strong, fragrant aroma of salted egg yolk goodness. Promising!

We spy a slightly larger-than-usual mound of crispy fries drenched in a gloopy light yellow sauce speckled with green bits of curry leaves. If we didn't know any better, we’d think it was honey mustard or hollandaise with parsley. We shove a couple of sauce-laden potato sticks into our gobs. The fries are good, as usual. However, instead of the gloriously rich, umami flavour of buttery salted egg we were expecting, there’s an odd tang not unlike that of yellow mustard and processed cheese (the kind you find on nachos at the cinema). The slightest savoury hint of salted egg yolk creeps in only later, like an afterthought. Moreover, the curry leaves seem to be there for decoration — we can’t taste it at all.

Not nice. We guess salted egg anything is McDonald’s Achilles' heel.The Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries ($4.10 a la carte; $1.20 as an upgrade with any meal) is available at all McDonald’s outlets, via McDelivery and GrabFood, while stocks last.

The salted egg everything trend is a beast that never dies. (Well, unless you're a hapless lizard in a bag of Irvins chips). And it appears that McDonald’s is hoping for a more successful take two with the eggy ingredient following its Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Burger debut in 2016, which garnered a lacklustre response. Enter the Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries ($4.10 a la carte; $1.20 as an upgrade with any meal), which dropped on its menu today. “The salted egg yolk sauce [on the fries] is different from the one used in the Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Burger” assures McDonald’s PR rep. We popped by the Tampines Mall outlet for a taste.
