Taiwan’s Chun Fun How, Creator Of “The 1st Sweet Potato Bubble Tea”, Opening In S’pore
It’s pretty floral cups are the “most Instagram-worthy”.
Yet another Taiwanese bubble tea chain is settling on Singapore’s shores: say hello to Chun Fun How, whose claim to fame is being the first player “who created the first Sweet Potato Bubble Tea”. It’s launching its flagship store at the Esplanade mid-March.
Established in Taichung in 2014, the brand positions itself as a “hidden gem”. Chun Fun How’s press release says that it’s relatively unknown among tourists due to its store locations in business districts and near university campuses but is however popular with students and white-collar workers. Judging by its 14 Taiwanese outlets, two franchised stores in Hong Kong and Vancouver, Canada, and expansion plans in Indonesia and Singapore, there might be some truth to that claim.
Similar to its counterparts in Taiwan, the store will sport a floral theme, no doubt to link to the first two characters of the brand, “Chun Fun”, meaning spring fragrance. Drinks will only be for takeaway and a one-for-one promotion is in the pipeline for the opening launch. In light of the COVID-19 situation, guests will be required to sanitise their hands before entering the store.
Similar to Chinese tea chain HeyTea, Chun Fun How serves mainly fruit teas, using “all-premium” ingredients imported from Taiwan. It prides itself on its Four Seasons Oolong Tea from Nan Tou, which apparently boasts a “creamy-smooth, nectar-sweet floral taste and robust fragrance”. However, there will also be milky drinks and pearls on offer. While it’s still unconfirmed how many of the drinks from the original menu will be available here, the chain will offer five of its signature drinks, which are grouped into three “series”. New drinks and menu items exclusive to the Singapore market will also be released later.
Part of Chun Fun How's appeal is its trademark pretty cups. Out of the 19 Instagrammable designs in Taiwan, five will be launched here first, including the retro-looking Black Floral, the Green Floral (both pictured above), and even a Dinosaur Cup for kids. Plans are underway to include exclusive local designs too. Here’re a few signature drinks to look forward to.
Chun Fun How’s press release states it “created the first Sweet Potato Bubble Tea” which “caught the nation by storm and has fast become a huge crowd favourite”. The drinks uses sweet potatoes imported from Taiwan. This Sweet Potato Black Tea Latte with Pearls is the highest rated drink in Chun Fun How’s line of sweet potato tea offerings. The tubers are blended into a fine paste and mixed with black tea and milk to form a rich drink. It’s then garnished with tapioca pearls.
The No.1 bestseller according to Chun Fun How’s Taiwanese website is this Lychee Four Season tea with bite-sized Aloe Vera chunks, which it claims is “rich in antioxidant and antibacterial properties”. It's made with Taiwanese fresh fruits with no artificial flavourings or preservatives.
Pearls and sugared winter melon are added to your choice of lemonade or Chun Fun How’s Four Seasons Oolong Tea.
