Zion Riverside’s Famed Char Kway Teow Stall Relocating To Chinatown Temporarily

Zion Riverside Food Centre will undergo renovations from 1 November to 28 February 2021. Out of our three favourite stalls at the hawker centre — Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway, Michelin Bib Gourmand stall Fresh Taste Big Prawn Noodle and No. 18 Zion Road Fried Kway Teow — only the latter will be open for biz during the overhaul, at a temporary location.

While we couldn’t get hold of the actual hawkers, we spoke to hawker delivery service Food Heroes (which delivers food from several hawker centres, including Zion Riverside) who confirmed that No.18 Zion Rd Fried Kway Teow will be relocating temporarily to Chinatown Complex Food Centre from 1 Nov to 28 Feb 2021 (above pic), whilst Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway and Fresh Taste Big Prawn Noodle will remain closed during the renovation period.

The stall usually boasts the longest queue at the Zion food centre. And deservedly so — it serves one of our island’s best renditions of char kway teow, in our opinion. Each plate of noodles is adequately moist, smoky, salty-sweet and yummy with a good amount of dark sauce, fish cakes, lup cheong and briny cockles.

While Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway stall will remain closed during renovations, you can still whack second-gen hawker Peter Goh’s yummy black carrot cake till the end of October 2020. We love that he chops the carrot cake into itty bitty pieces, which better soak up all the flavours of the crunchy cai poh and caramelly dark sauce.

This Michelin Bib Gourmand stall was called “Noo Cheng Adam Road Big Prawn Mee” until it was taken over by the owner’s son and renamed. Yes, it’s affiliated to Noo Cheng Adam Road Big Prawn Mee stall at Adam Road. Admittedly, we haven’t had this after the change of ownership, so we can’t vouch for its quality now. But we used to enjoy the umami soup boiled with pork ribs, prawn heads (and also cabbage for sweetness, we hear). Available at Zion Road till end October — the stall will reopen only next Feb.
