Covid-19 has caused many F&B establishments to call it a day, and the latest to announce its closure is popular burger chain Omakase Burger, which specialises in American-style gourmet smashed beef burgers. A post on its social media platform today says:

“After 9 years of great memories and millions of burgers sold, we are announcing with great sadness that the last of our American smashburgers will be rolling off our griddles on Monday, 25 October 2021. The good news is that this is not ‘goodbye’ but simply ‘see you later’.”

The chain currently has one flagship outlet at Orchard Central, which will close on Oct 25, and four pop-up outlets at Bukit Timah, Bedok, East Coast and One-North that will operate till Oct 27.

1 of 4 Going into “hibernation”

However, Omakase Burger’s owner Cheng Hsin Yao tells 8days.sg that the closure is not a permanent one, calling it a “hiberation”. He explains that he had decided to put his business on hiatus due to Covid-19. “This hibernation is voluntary and graceful with a bigger plan in the background to improve ourselves and come back with a bang,” he says, though “no exact date has been decided [for the reopening], but it’s unlikely to be within this year”. He also shares that he’s considering “multiple offers to take Omakase Burger further in Singapore and China”.

  • 2 of 4 Greek sister concept to close permanently

According to Hsin Yao, Omakase Burger’s sister concept Supergreek will “close and not return”. It previously had a takeaway kiosk at Raffles City, plus an existing one at Orchard Central beside Omakase Burger. Last October, he also made the decision to shutter his multi-stall food enclave Picnic at Wisma Atria, which had been hit hard by the no dine-in rule for the Circuit Breaker and Phase 2 government measures.

  • 3 of 4 “Never been harder to run an F&B business”

Omakase Burger’s farewell post urged their customers to “continue to support the heroes and heroines of our local F&B establishments”, adding: “It has never been harder to run an F&B business than it is today and whatever your favourite place is, do your best to show them how much you love them. You’ll really make their day.”
