After almost 20 years in showbiz, Felicia Chin, who turns 37 this Sunday (Oct 24), is still experiencing new firsts in her career, although the latest one was a little on the spooky side.

In this week’s episode of Mediacorp bite-sized series #JustSwipeLah, host Juin Teh visited the set of upcoming drama Leave No Soul Behind, where Feli, whose face was covered in ghostly pale make-up, was filming a scene where she has to lie inside a coffin.

We don’t want to give away any spoilers about what happened to Feli’s character, so you’ll just have to tune into Leave No Soul Behind at the end of the year to find out.

As far as Feli can recall, it’s the first time she’s ever had to do such a, um, interesting thing for work, as she later told 8days.sg in a phone interview.

“Seeing my own picture in front of the coffin felt so surreal and confusing, even though I knew it was for the show,” she said. “It was a little creepy at first lah ‘cos everything looked very real, but thankfully they decided not to cover the coffin in the end.”

Of course, Feli didn’t need to remain inside the coffin the whole time during the shoot (the longest she was in there was 20 minutes), but she estimates that she had to step in and out of it “over 20 times”.

“The production assistant joked that maybe I should get 20 ang pows,” Feli laughed, explaining that it’s usually a tradition to bless the actors involved in death or funeral scenes with a red packet as “a good luck thing”.

“Normally we just get coins, but I realised that the person who sleeps inside the coffin gets a bigger ang pow, so I got two S$20 ang pows for the two-day shoot, a total of S$40,” she shared. “I was told that you must finish spending the money on the day you receive the red packet, so I went to the petrol station and spent everything on drinks and snacks. (Laughs)

In the #JustSwipeLah clip, Feli also revealed that it is customary for the ang pow to be put under one’s foot before entering the coffin, so she placed it inside her shoe.

When we asked if she considers herself superstitious, Feli said that she doesn’t, but: “If people give [me an ang pow] then I just take lor! (Guffaws)

The devout Christian added that she said a prayer for production to go smoothly and reported that nothing weird or unsettling happened while they were shooting the coffin scene.

Well, maybe except for the time she unintentionally gave her poor colleagues a fright.

According to Feli, she had entered the coffin without being noticed by the crew members and scared them when she suddenly sat up, the whole sight made even more eerie by her ghostly makeup and the blue lighting.

“I think [filming this scene] was scarier for them than it was for me!” she quipped.

On a more cheerful note, Feli was full of pride and excitement when she gushed about her boyfriend Jeffrey Xu recently moving into his own bachelor pad, a resale condo in Bendemeer that he purchased for about S$800K.

“It’s ever-changing ‘cos he’s quite good with setting up his place with the things that he likes,” she said. “Every time I visit him, it seems like something has changed or moved. He didn’t spend a lot on renovations but I think it has a nice feel to it.”

As for whether the two of them, who have been dating for almost six years, have discussed their living arrangements after they tie the knot since Feli also has a place of her own, she admitted: “Not really. We’re taking it one step at a time.”

  • 5 of 5 Nope, still no wedding bells for Felifrey yet
