First Look: Tom Hanks, Robert Zemeckis Reunite For Disney+'s Live-Action Remake Of Pinocchio

The live-action remake of the classic children’s fairy tale will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in September.

Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis have teamed up again for the live-action remake of Disney’s 1940 Oscar-winning animated classic Pinocchio.

Disney+ has dropped a first-look image of Pinocchio, slated to launch on the streaming service in September.

In Pinocchio, Hanks — who’s worked with Zemeckis on Forrest Gump, Castaway and The Polar Express — plays Geppetto, the wood-carver who builds and treats Pinocchio (The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his own son.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Jiminy Cricket, who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his “conscience”; Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key is “Honest” John; Lorraine Bracco is Sofia the Seagull, a new character; and Luke Evans is The Coachman.

Zemeckis’s Pinocchio isn’t the only adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s beloved 1883 children’s book out this year. Already released is the Russian animated feature Pinocchio: A True Story (with Pauly Shore voicing the title role in the English version due to launch in the US later this month). In December, there’s Pinocchio, a stop-motion musical from Netflix, directed by Guillermo del Moro and Mark Gustafson and featuring the voices of Gregory Mann, David Bradley and Ewan McGregor.

After Pinocchio, Disney’s next live-action remake is Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy, dropping in cinemas in May 2023.
