HK Actor Oscar Leung Didn’t Dare Leave His House After He Was Attacked For Expressing His Patriotism For China

Now that he’s based in China, he says he “enjoys real freedom”.

Hongkong actor Oscar Leung has never shied away from showing his love for China.

The 43-year-old, who has been furthering his career on the mainland in recent years, has expressed his patriotism for China on Weibo many times.

In February, when Hongkong faced a surge in Covid-19 cases, he reposted a video of people in China lending support to Hongkong’s fight against the pandemic.

"Kids with mothers will not be doomed. Hongkong can be saved. Believe in the motherland, the best place to fight the pandemic,” he wrote on Weibo.

However, Oscar didn’t always feel he could express his views so freely.

The actor had previously shared in an interview that he was attacked online for his patriotic remarks.

Not only did he receive threats, he was also doxxed by trolls. He lived in trepidation and was so scared that he did not dare to leave his Hongkong home with his wife and kids for fear of being recognised.

But now that he’s moved to China, he has no more such reservations.

"I can express my true thoughts on social media without worrying about being flamed. I enjoy real freedom here,” he said.

He pointed out that the cyberbullying incident made him more melancholic and feels that sometimes people do not understand him.

“No matter what happens, I still prefer the authentic version of me,” he said.

More opportunities in China

The huge China market has also given him more opportunities to try new roles.

When his drama Private Dishes In Red Mansions aired last year, he sang praises of the crew and how the cast was always well taken care of. He even had someone with whom to rehearse his lines.

In addition to acting, Oscar also runs a business in China.

Last November, he opened a car dealership with Raymond Lam’s wife Carina Zhang in Shenzhen, China. The dealership specialises in luxury car brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce.

With his career and business flourishing in China, it’s no wonder Oscar intends to relocate his family to Shanghai.

Not only do he and his wife like the city, they also feel that the environment and education system are suitable for their kids.
