Hong Huifang Nominated For Best Actress At Golden Horse Awards; Jack Neo-Produced Crime Thriller Picks Up Best Action Choreography Nod

The 59th edition of the 'Chinese Oscars' will be presented on Nov 19.

Hong Huifang is up for a Golden Horse Award in November.

The 61-year-old veteran performer picked up a Best Leading Actress nomination for Ajoomma, a drama following a middle-aged Singaporean widow (Hong) who rediscovers herself during a solo trip to South Korea.

The movie, produced by Anthony Chen (via Giraffe Pictures), also received nods for Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay for Singaporean filmmaker He Shuming, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Korea’s Jung Dong-Hwan.

Hong is up against Cya Liu in Limbo — the Hong Kong thriller with the most nominations of 14 — Tsai Husan-yen in Incantation, Angela Yuen Lai-lam in The Narrow Road, and Sylvia Chang in A Light Never Goes Out.

Nominations for the 59th Golden Horse Awards — dubbed the Chinese Oscars — were announced on Tuesday (Sept 27). The awards ceremony will be presented at the National Dr Sun Yet-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei on Nov 19.

Elsewhere, Geylang, a Jack Neo-produced crime drama, is vying for Best Action Choreography for Sunny Pang, who’s also known as an actor, notably for his role as Inspector Han on the Mediacorp series Code of Law.

Directed by Boi Kwong, Geylang is about five disparate people whose lives intertwine as they deal with issues of money, class, ambition and love in the eponymous enclave. The cast includes Mark Lee, Sheila Sim and Shane Mardjuki and Taiwan’s Patricia Lin.

Ajoomma will make its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival on Oct 7; it opens in cinemas here Oct 27, with sneaks from Oct 21-24. At time of writing, Geylang remains undated.
