How To Take 17 Days Of Leave & Get 55 Days Off In 2023 — Best Days To Chope Leave To Maximise Public Holidays

That's seven long weekends we have in 2023.

These days, it pays to plan your annual leave early, especially if you're travelling and want to avoid sky-high air ticket prices. And 2023 is the year you’ll want to do it way ahead of time, 'cos, well, everyone seems to be travelling.

There are eight long weekends in 2023 — one more than this year — that you can apply for annual leave strategically to maximise your days off.

If you're prudent about it, it's possible to take as little as three days of annual leave to get 33 days off. Or you could chope 17 days of leave and get 55 days off — including four extended breaks that are at least nine days long. Here's how.

Public holidays and long weekends in Singapore in 2023 — and how to maximise them:

#1: Jan 1 (Sun): New Year’s Day (Jan 2 is a public holiday)
Take leave on: -
Works out to: An extra day to nurse that hangover, no annual leave required.

#2: Jan 22 (Sun) and Jan 23 (Mon): Chinese New Year (Jan 24 is a PH)
Take leave on: -
Works out to: The longest long weekend in 2023 — four days off with zero days of annual leave taken. All the better for hotpot and mahjong sessions… or a quick getaway.
For an even longer break: Take Jan 25-27 off — three days of leave in return for a whopping nine consecutive days off from Jan 21-29.

#3: Apr 7 (Fri): Good Friday
Take leave on: -
Works out to: A three-day weekend.

#4: Apr 22 (Sat): Hari Raya Puasa
Take leave on: -
Works out to: A two-day weekend.

#5: May 1 (Mon): Labour Day
Take leave on: -
Works out to: A three-day weekend.
For an even longer break: If you want to extend this three-day long weekend, it may be worth taking leave from May 2-5 — use four days of annual leave in return for nine days off.

#6: Jun 2 (Fri)*: Vesak Day
Take leave on: -
Works out to: One more long weekend. (*The public holiday for Vesak Day was revised from June 3 to June 2.)

#7: Jun 29 (Thu): Hari Raya Haji
Take leave on: Jun 30 (Fri)
Works out to: A four-day break from Jun 29-Jul 2.
For an even longer break: Take four days of leave (Jun 26, 27, 28 and 30) for nine days off work from Jun 24 to Jul 2.

#8: Aug 9 (Wed): National Day
Take leave on: Aug 7-8 (Mon-Tue) or Aug 10-11 (Thu-Fri)
Works out to: Two days of leave for five days off. Fab for a shopping trip in Seoul or a leisurely beach vacay in Redang.

#9: Nov 12 (Sun): Deepavali (Nov 13 is a PH)
Take leave on: -
Works out to: A three-day long weekend.

#10: Dec 25 (Mon): Christmas Day
Take leave on: -
Works out to: The final long weekend of the year.
For an even longer break: Take Dec 26-29 off for an extended year-end break from Dec 23-Jan 1, 2024.
