James Corden Apologises For Restaurant Ban Controversy: "It Was Never My Intention To Upset Anyone"

James Corden apologised for his "ungracious" behaviour to the staff of New York restaurant Balthazar on Monday's The Late Late Show.

James Corden has insisted that he "never intended" to cause upset at the Balthazar in New York.

During the opening monologue of The Late Late Show on Monday (Oct 25), Corden spent five minutes addressing his temporary ban from New York restaurant Balthazar for being "ungracious" to the waitstaff.

"Last week, there were stories about me being banned from a restaurant," he said. "And at the time I considered, you know, tweeting about it or Instagramming about it. As my dad pointed out to me on Saturday — he said, 'Son, well, you did complain, so you might need to explain.' Look, when you make a mistake, you've gotta take responsibility."

Corden then went on to explain how he berated the server "in the heat of the moment" for accidentally handing a dish to his wife she was allergic to.

“As her meal came wrong to the table the third time, in the heat of the moment I made a sarcastic rude comment about cooking it myself,” Corden said.

“And it is a comment I deeply regret," he added. "I understand the difficulties of being a server. I worked shifts at restaurants for years."

Corden also regretted downplaying the incident in an interview with The New York Times when he dismissed the backlash as "so silly".

He said, “I didn’t shout or scream. I didn’t get up out of my seat. I didn’t call anyone names or use derogatory language. I have been walking around thinking that I hadn’t done anything wrong, right?

"But the truth is I have. I made a rude comment and it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment. It was ungracious to the server."

"It just wasn't. And I love that restaurant. I love the staff there. I hope I'm allowed in again one day. So when I'm back in New York, I can go there and apologise in person, which is something I will absolutely do.."

Corden also mentioned that he chatted with restaurant owner Keith McNally privately about the incident.

“I called him straight away and I told him how upset I was that anybody was hurt by anything that I had said. We had a good talk. He appreciated the call,” Corden. “I was happy that we got to clear the air and I felt like we dealt with it privately. But by this point, the story was out there. People were upset.”
