Joanne Peh Thinks It Is Important To “Improve The Use Of Language” In Local Live Streams, Says Watching Overseas Ones Helped Her Prepare For Streamers Go Live

Streamers Go Live team captain Joanne Peh has had an excellent run on the show so far.

Besides having her team members Xixi Lim and Yang Guang Ke Le emerge as the streamers to beat, she also won the first live stream session over seasoned online seller Mark Lee’s team.

When 8days.sg caught up with Jo after the second live stream round, which saw Lee Teng take over Mark as team captain as the latter is away for work, she tells us about what she did to prepare for the competition.

Turns out, the actress has always been interested in live stream selling, and regularly watches such content. However, she specifies that she “personally prefers [the] style” of overseas live streaming, and “of course not [the ones] here”.

“I study the way we should be communicating with the fans about the products that we are selling, and the proper use of vocabulary,” says Joanne, adding that she has taken pointers from overseas live streamers, especially with the way they present their products.

While Mark has plenty of actual experience live streaming in Singapore, Joanne feels that she sees "the difference in what is done overseas and what is done here" and thinks she is able to "bring a different sort of element to the table". 

She goes on to stress the importance of using language correctly, saying: "The proper usage of vocabulary is also something I think we we want to be able to improve. In Singapore a lot of us use a mix of languages, right? And I think that’s fine for an online platform but then with the world being able to see what our station is producing, you don’t want to lose face."

As for her team members, Joanne acknowledges that many of them are starting off at different points. For example, Xixi has plenty of experience with live streaming as compared to Paul.

Her goal, she says, is to help them grow into better streamers and to "help them move up to the next level" instead of “wanting Xixi to be like Paul or Paul to be like [her]”.

When asked about the skills she has imparted to her team, Joanne says she doesn’t want them to be "just limited to live streaming, because a lot of it are skills [they] can apply to every area in everything [they] choose to do".

She calls them "universal skills" that are beneficial to any content creator. “That rigour, the kind of investment, the kind of homework, the kind of expectations you need to have for yourself and the kind of sincerity you need to show to your audience... These are things that I find very important and will help [them] whether it’s acting or hosting or performing.”
