Lady Gaga In Talks To Play Harley Quinn In Joker Musical Sequel —Yes, It’s A Musical!

Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, in a musical? What's not to like?

Somebody hold my hand because, if the planets are aligned, Lady Gaga is joining the DC world. Hopefully.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gaga is in talks to appear as Harley Quinn, aka Joker’s frequent partner-in-crime and occasional lover in Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to 2019’s billion-dollar grossing origin story of Batman’s greatest nemesis (Joaquin Phoenix).

Oh, it gets better: Joker: Folie à Deux is rumoured to be a musical sequel, a first for a DC movie realm. Lady Gaga in a musical? Sounds like a match made in heaven. Phillips had a prior working relationship with Gaga: he was one of the producers of 2018’s A Star is Born, which won Gaga a Best Original Song Oscar.

Harley Quinn’s involvement in Joker 2 was first mooted when Phillips shared the cover of the screenplay last week. The fancy subtitle, Folie à Deux, refers to a delusional disorder shared by two or more individuals (usually, the members of a close family) — to which everyone (read: comic book aficionados) naturally assumes is Quinn because she and Joker have a long loony history together.

Quinn made her debut in the 1990s’ Batman: The Animated Series (it’s the September 11, 1992 episode, ‘Joker’s Favor’, to be exact). If Gaga’s deal comes through, she’ll be the second actress to play Quinn on the big screen; Margot Robbie has played the role three times, in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Quinn also has her own HBO Max animated series with The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco voicing the character.
