Maggie Cheung, 58, Just Joined Douyin; Fans Hope She Won't Start Doing Live Stream Sales

The elusive star gained 440K followers in just 24 hours.

Believe it or not, Maggie Cheung, 58, has started her first social media account.

The Hong Kong former screen goddess has largely kept a low profile — save for the occasional appearance and performance at events — after retiring from acting in 2006.

But surprise, surprise, she joined Douyin yesterday (Nov 22) and shared a couple of throwback videos.

Welcome Maggie!

Maggie, 58, said the decision to join Douyin was a sudden one and felt a little “strange”.

She was clearing her computer when she stumbled on some home videos. There were clips of her at work, snippets of her daily life, and seeing them made her happy and emotional, so she decided to share them.

In one of the clips, she is on a shoot with Swiss photographer René Habermacher in London in 2008, and the other showed her riding a bike on the streets of Paris.

“Watching these clips again, I felt that time passed really quickly. I feel a little strange when I see myself in the videos and the backgrounds are very different from what I am experiencing now. I never thought 10 years would go by just like this,” she said, adding that she is doing well now.

The account attracted over 440,000 followers in under 24 hours and the videos went viral, which shouldn't be all that shocking since everyone is excited that elusive star is finally online.

Fans were certainly pleased to see Maggie, welcoming her to social media. However, some commented that they hope she doesn't start doing live stream sales, which would "devalue" her goddess image.

“If she wanted to make money, she would have taken up an endorsement a long time ago, why bother to sell things on live stream? The goddess is just here for fun, of course it is possible that she might hold a virtual concert,” said one fan.

Another wrote: "I think she is very real.
I have seen news about her shopping at roadside stalls. All that talk about her doing live stream sales, I think you are thinking too much."
