SBCD Korean Tofu House Opens ‘Express’ Hawker Outlet With $6 Tofu Set

Comforting Korean soft tofu stews in a kopitiam, at a fraction of the restaurant’s prices.

There’s something about Korean tofu stews that’s incredibly soul-lifting, especially if they are loaded with ethereally silken tofu cubes and a golden gooey yolk. Local chain SBCD Korean Tofu House specialises in the dish, offering “soon tofu”, which means ‘soft tofu’ in Korean. It currently has three restaurant outlets here at Tanjong Pagar Centre, Millenia Walk and ARC mall.

Last week, SBCD opened its first “express” hawker outlet called Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu at Ang Mo Kio Ave 8. On the menu are six soon tofu rice sets, served in SBCD-style black claypots with rice, kimchi, seaweed and “air-flown silken soon tofu”.

What’s most exciting about this stall, in our opinion, is its prices. They start from $6 for a Vegetable Soon Tofu Set. Other picks include a Pork/Beef Soon Tofu Set ($7), Seaweed Soon Tofu Set ($8), Assorted Soon Tofu Set ($8) and Dumpling Soon Tofu Set ($7). In comparison, a soon tofu set at SBCD costs around $21.90.

There’s also Mandu (from $4.50 for three pieces), Korean-style dumplings stuffed with your choice of pork, kimchi or japchae (Korean stir-fried glass noodles). Incidentally, Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is in the same coffeeshop as another famous hawker brand, Johor Bahru’s charcoal-roasted duck joint Meng Meng.

Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu and SBCD Korean Tofu House are both opened by Korean chef Nam Kyoung Soo, who named SBCD after the wealthy Korean district Buk Chang Dong (we’re guessing the ‘S’ stands for Soon or Singapore?). He also came up with a proprietary “10-step secret soup” for his tofu stew.

According to SBCD’s website, its soon tofu is made with mature white soybeans from Paju, South Korea, a city near the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) which is apparently known for its pristine produce due to its isolated location.
