Elvin Ng and Guo Liang have certainly come a long way since their infamous 2010 feud. You know, the one where Elvin blogged about a certain “huai ren (“bad person” in Chinese) he encountered on the set of Breakout, who was later revealed to be Guo Liang. Yup, very drama.

Fortunately, they eventually buried the hatchet and went on to work together in 2018’s Heart to Heart.

They were also able to sit down and have a friendly chat in the latest episode of Mediacorp talk show The Inner Circle, which Guo Liang hosts, but there was surprisingly (or not?) zero mention of the incident, and they completely behaved as if nothing ever happened between them.

One confrontation they did discuss was the time Elvin, 40, told off a veteran Taiwanese actor for his inappropriate and unprofessional — and dare we add, petty — shenanigans.

According to Elvin, it happened when they were filming a show in KL. Although the other actor (whom Elvin didn't name) was more established, Elvin had a meatier role, so the former presumably wasn’t quite used to playing second fiddle and would go around acting like some alpha male, as if trying to assert dominance.

His antics started on the second day of filming. Once, Elvin put his bag on the floor, and the Taiwanese actor deliberately put a chair over it and glared at him. How rude!

The bully would also purposely try to distract Elvin and make him forget his lines while filming, so he could grab the opportunity to mock him with insults like, “You see? You think you’re an Ah Ge?”

The final straw happened on the last day of production.

Elvin was shooting an emotional scene on a rooftop, but the Taiwanese actor was deliberately being a nuisance and making all kinds of disrespectful remarks.

Unable to take his irksome co-star’s nonsense any longer, Elvin lost it and started yelling at him.

“I asked to see the producer, and I was furious but also shedding tears ‘cos I had been bullied the whole time,” Elvin recalled. “I told the producer that it started on the second day. It was simple: You could either replace him or replace me, but then it would make me look like I was acting like a big shot, so it was hard.”

While Elvin did feel a little mad at himself for being unable to endure it until the very end, he eventually decided that if he had said nothing and gone home with his tail between his legs, he would have felt sorry for himself.

Another drama where Elvin faced difficulties on set, albeit of an entirely different kind, was 2012’s Absolutely Charming, which also starred Taiwanese actress Cherry Hsia.

On the first day of filming, Elvin got a call from his younger sister asking him to quickly make his way to the hospital to see their father.

“When he was being wheeled into the operating theatre, I didn’t dare to say ‘bye bye’ and just told him, ‘Pa, I’m going to work,’” he said. “The surgery went well, but there may have been some complications after that. I kept travelling between the set and hospital without going home, and within four days, my dad passed away.”

Executive producer Leong Lye Lin, who appeared as one of the mystery guests, shared that she really wanted to stop production at that time, but ‘cos there were issues with Cherry’s schedule, the most she could do was give Elvin a week off to settle his father’s funeral.

However, Elvin had trouble focusing and controlling his emotions when he returned to work. Lye Lin shared that she would often receive calls from the actor saying, “I really can’t do this”, or from the director, who was at a loss ‘cos Elvin could not remember his lines.

Fortunately, he pulled through, and Lye Lin took the opportunity to thank him for his dedication and professionalism.
