Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Dec 11-18)
All the photos that made us hungry this week.
This week, Fann Wong was one of the lucky few to get first dibs on Li Nanxing’s latest ramen creation with Ippudo; Gini Chang whipped up her own festive-themed dishes; and Justin Ang put together an OTT milkshake dripping in chocolate sauce. Meanwhile, Tay Ping Hui got to savour his dream cake. Read on for more.
What they ate: Limited edition ramen
Yummy factor: Nanxing has teamed up with Ippudo to create a new menu item — Dried Scallop Hae Bee Hiam Ramen — and it’s exclusive to the ramen chain’s Singapore stores. Fann, along with Nanxing’s celeb pals like Julie Tan and Mark Lee, were one of the first to try the fusion dish, which also features sambal-infused garlic oil, in-house miso paste and a thick slab of tender flame-seared chashu.
What he ate: Biangbiang noodles
Yummy factor: We’ve got to give it to Alan — he’s a brave man for attempting to slurp up some biangbiang noodles while wearing a white top. He especially loved the Shaanxi speciality for its chewy and bouncy texture. His only gripe? The chilli oil marinade could have been spicier.
What she ate: High tea
Yummy factor: Fiona joined her girlfriends for high tea on board the Orient Express — a pop-up exhibition at Gardens by the Bay — where they got to nibble on lavish creations by three-Michelin-starred Chef Yannick Alleno. Think French pastries such as caviar lime madeleines, coffee-flavoured religuses pastries, profiteroles, as well as traditional English scones.
What he ate: OTT milkshake
Yummy factor: Thinking of having a fancy milkshake? Justin made his decadent one with a DIY kit from Black Tap, and the shake’s aptly named The Brooklyn Blackout. Think plenty of mini chocolate chips, chocolate brownies, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream for a major sugar rush.
What she ate: Christmas-themed dishes
Yummy factor: Running out of ideas on what to have for your home parties in December? Take a leaf out of Gini’s cookbook and whip up these enticing Santa-themed dishes, like the tomato chicken stew that features the vegetable as Santa’s hat, or the innovative wreath salad decorated with fresh shrimps, cubed carrots and corn.
What he ate: Birthday cake
Yummy factor: Even though his birthday falls on December 23, Elvin has had his first celebration for the special occasion this week. His cake looks especially yummy, decorated with chocolate bars and topped with what looks like M&Ms.
What she ate: Laksa
Yummy factor: You've tried baguette with curry, but what about flaky, buttery croissants with laksa? That was the unique combination Zoe had during her staycation at the Fullerton Bay Hotel. Now we're tempted to give this pairing a try.
What she ate: Speculoos brownie
Yummy factor: Nurul loves her desserts, and the speculoos brownie from online store Dr. Kitchen hits the sweet spot for her with its dark chocolate goodness and molten speculoos centre. The only thing that’s missing is a scoop of Vanilla ice cream!
What she ate: Pastries and cakes
Yummy factor: Cheryl got caught snacking while setting up her dessert table at home but who can blame her, with a tempting spread like that? Amongst the sweet treats from Sugar Thieves were croissants topped with pecan and bacon, houjicha-flavoured mont blanc, as well as sticky date bundt cakes. What a treat!
What he ate: Pao fan
Yummy factor: Junyang and wifey Candice Toh lent their support to Chew Chor Meng’s latest F&B venture — a pao fan stall located at Sultan Plaza — and it looks like they had the double fish version, which comes with both sliced and fried fish, and topped with plenty of fried egg floss. Couple that with crispy rice puffs and a flavourful broth, we bet it made for a satisfying meal.
What she ate: Sweet potato porridge feast
Yummy factor: Xiuhuan’s sweet potato porridge feast over the weekend proved to be a hit with her family, especially her mother-in-law. The Taiwanese-style dishes included san bei ji (or Three Cup Chicken), pork liver flavoured with sesame oil (daughter Shalynn Tsai’s fave), chye poh omelette, and oh-so-sinful but delish fried pork lard rice.
What he ate: Vegan delights
Yummy factor: Perhaps Daniel’s next F&B venture will be a vegan resto? His wife Fay Tan, who’s vegan, absolutely loved the meatless feast Daniel whipped up for her and his mum. Think purple carrots, grilled brussel sprouts, tossed avocado cubes and cherry tomatoes, and what looks like stuffed portobello mushrooms.
What he ate: Agar agar cake
Yummy factor: A Pikachu-themed cake for Ping Hui’s 50th birthday? Well, why not, especially when the agar agar creation matches the closet fan’s tee?
What she ate: Langoustine
Yummy factor: Check out Jade’s main dish at Spanish restaurant UNA — a winning combination of succulent langoustine served with avocado lime, pumpkin mousse and aioli. It’s part of the resto’s festive set menu, and the delicate amuse bouche — featuring crystal bread, tomato and iberico ham — looks like a fantastic start to her meal too.
What she ate: Cakes and bakes
Yummy factor: Yvonne has been busy all week baking and piping away for her nearest and dearest — check out the vintage-style cake with its intricate piping design, as well as the fluffy pumpkin cinnamon rolls and dinosaur-themed cake!
What she ate: Japanese feast
Yummy factor: Kimberly visited Shatoburian Yakuniku with her girlfriends for their annual Christmas dinner, and it was certainly a gastronomic evening. Think premium A5 wagyu don topped with creamy uni and paper-thin white truffles slices, truffle camembert cheese with crackers, and thick slices of premium wagyu sizzling on the barbecue. Yum!
What they ate: Comfort nosh
Yummy factor: Who can resist a creamy pasta done right, like the smoked duck pasta served at Hungry Bear Cafe? Plus, the Hainanese Chicken Burger Tay Ying and Hazelle shared was a unique combination of Hainanese-style fried chicken topped off with coleslaw and lettuce and sandwiched between soft brioche buns.
What she ate: Cheese platter
Yummy factor: The singer got spoiled silly at C Cafe with the most amazing looking cheese platter accompanied by fruits, ham, nuts and crackers. Couple that with fruity sangria and some champagne... And she’s got the perfect Christmas feast in front of her.
What she ate: Christmas log cake
Yummy factor: Belinda received a Christmas log cake from catering company Three Embers and she couldn’t stop gushing over how pretty it was, adorned with festive ornaments. Plus, with ingredients like salted caramel and dark chocolate — it must be delicious too, right?
What he ate: Lots of seafood
Yummy factor: Freshly-shucked oysters, battered tiger prawns and crispy heads, and gorgeous cocktails like the multi-hued Sarimanok (a rum and mango-based concoction)... That pretty much sums up Gerald’s time at MO Bar, complete with a picturesque view of the Marina Bay.
