Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Jul 10-17)
All the photos that made us hungry this week.
Can’t travel? No problem. This week, celebs had their fill of regional street eats, with Mark Lee savouring the best of Thai snacks, while Tracy Lee got to reminisce about Hongkong’s local must-haves. Meanwhile, Sora Ma baked her own baguette and although Jade Seah had to be hospitalised for a bit, she’s still in good spirits — the premium menu served, featuring dishes like lobster laksa, probably made up for it. Get well soon!
What she ate: Tasty hospital food
Yummy factor: Although Jade had to be hospitalised for a surgery (she broke her nose), every cloud has a silver lining. In Jade’s case, it’s insurance coverage and better-than-expected meals served. Lobsters, scallops and abalone, anyone? Plus, there was laksa too, and dessert was a chocolate fondant dusted with icing sugar... Hospital food has definitely upped its game.
What she ate: Claypot crab vermicelli
Yummy factor: Although Yvonne struggled a little to prep the crabs for cooking (look at the substantial amount of roe!), her first attempt at claypot crab vermicelli looked so professionally done, it could have been mistaken for a restaurant’s signature dish.
What they ate: Ondeh ondeh cake
Yummy factor: Is it just us, or does Christopher look like he simply can’t wait to get started on the ondeh ondeh cake? Meanwhile, Fann may just be inspired to make her own rendition, with plenty of grated coconut too.
What he ate: Omakase meal
Yummy factor: Dinner couldn’t be fancier for Tosh, who had an omakase course at Nago Imo. Think decadent morsels of wagyu sandos, sashimi served with truffles and sea urchin, as well as fresh oysters topped with ikura.
What she ate: Curry fish balls
Yummy factor: When you can’t jet off for a quick getaway, munching on local favourites from your destination of choice is likely the next best thing. For Tracy, Hong Kong was probably a few mouthfuls away with her bowl of curry fish balls — courtesy of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Now all that’s missing is a brusque hawker taking her order.
What he ate: Thai boat noodles
Yummy factor: Aside from their fresh coconuts, Jeffrey and Hong Junyang had at least five bowls of boat noodles between them at the latter’s resto, The Original Boat Noodle, although we’re pretty sure they have room for more.
What he ate: Thai snack platter
Yummy factor: Speaking of The Original Boat Noodle, Mark Lee and his wife Catherine Ng also had their fair share of boat noodles, as well as a most appetising-looking snack platter that featured sinful Thai street food classics like fried chicken skin, fried som tam (green papaya), and fried meatballs.
What she ate: Atas local delights
Yummy factor: Apple pressed pause on her usual ketogenic diet and had everything from lobster nasi lemak and kueh pie tee to addictive laksa mussels at Oscar's at Conrad Centennial Hotel. Now that’s how you have a proper cheat meal!
What she ate: Tea butter with toast
Yummy factor: A failed attempt at whipping up Dalgona tea latte turned out to be a stroke of culinary genius for Eelyn, who ended up creating a soft and creamy tea-flavoured butter that tastes superb with toasted bread. We need to try this!
What she ate: Roast duck noodles
Yummy factor: Rosalyn dined at old school eatery Mei Yuen for the first time, and loved how generous they were with the chunky duck meat atop the springy noodles. Also, will you look at the glorious sheen on the charred skin?
What he ate: Hainanese curry rice
Yummy factor: Few things satisfy Shane as much as a mountain of rice heaped with plenty of liao, and of course, rich curry gravy. He had his “favourite kind of mess” at Maxwell Food Centre, where he also devoured his must-have snack whenever he’s in the vicinity — a greasy but oh-so-delicious fried oyster cake.
What she ate: Fried chicken cake
Yummy factor: Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? GOLD 905 DJ and passionate foodie Denise Tan got the best of both worlds with her birthday cake , featuring plenty of fried chicken wings and skinny candles stuck on them. Happy birthday, Denise!
What he ate: Lor bak
Yummy factor: Lee Teng couldn’t stop gushing about how tender, fatty and juicy the braised pork he got from Lor Bak Mama was, and thanks to the father-to-be, we’re now craving for some with plenty of rice drenched in luscious gravy.
What she ate: Hokkien popiah
Yummy factor: Xiuhuan attempted her mum’s recipe for Hokkien popiah, and success has never been yummier. We can only imagine how long it took for her to chop up the lup cheong, prawns, turnips and more — according to Xiuhuan, prep work alone for making the dish can take up to three days, making every roll of popiah a labour of love.
What she ate: French baguettes
Yummy factor: For a first attempt, we must say that Sora’s homemade baguettes look legit with the crisp crust. Although they turned a little hard on the second day, we’re sure a little warm-up sesh in the oven and a touch of butter will have it tasting just as shiok in no time!
What they ate: Burgers and sundaes at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse
Yummy factor: While we’re not surprised that Wolfgang’s serves a decent beef burger, the swanky steakhouse isn’t necessarily the first to come to mind when desserts are in question. But after looking at the hot fudge sundaes that the Muttons had, we’ll be sure to save some stomach space for ice cream after.
What she ate: Plenty of cakes
Yummy factor: Happy 26th birthday, Bonnie! The actress celebrated her special day on July 12 and was fed well by her friends and loved ones with cakes in all forms and shapes. The cutest one had to be her customised confection from Pure Joy, featuring a caricature of herself holding a microphone and “singing”.
What he ate: Sushi
Yummy factor: Daniel has sent off the last sirloin he’ll be grilling in a while for Dan’s Steaks, a home-based F&B venture he started. To celebrate the milestone of serving up 600 steaks in two months, he went out for sushi with wifey Fay Tan, and made sure they had their fill of salmon, ikura and creamy uni.
What he ate: Traditional eats
Yummy factor: One of the best ways to bond is over yummy nosh, and that’s what Edmund did with his father and son, actor Chen Yixi. Lunch at Outram Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh saw them indulging in the peppery broth, as well as traditional eats like pork trotter jelly, a nostalgic Teochew cold dish that’s pretty hard to find these days.
What he ate: His son's birthday cakes
Yummy factor: Xu Bin’s adorable toddler, Ethan, turned 2 on Jul 10, and although his birthday celebration had to be a quieter affair this time, we’re sure he felt just as loved (if not more!) with plenty of presents and at least two custom confections — with one featuring whimsical teddy bears from Afters Bakery, and the other in a baby safari theme.
