Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Jun 26 - Jul 3)
All the photos that made us hungry this week.
It was cakes galore this week as Carrie Wong had her fill of sweets at Lady M, Fann Wong baked the cutest chiffon confection, and Cheryl Wee celebrated her wedding anniversary with a unique “cake” from her aunt — a touch of wasabi and soy sauce will probably go well with it. Meanwhile, Hong Junyang and Candyce Toh had a steaming hot date in their car, and Alfred Sim and Tay Kewei probably never expected to dine so well in a maternity ward.
What they ate: Fine hospital nosh
Yummy factor: Kewei and Alfred welcomed a new member of the family last Sunday (Jun 28) and aside from feeling mighty pleased about his newborn, the father-of-two couldn’t get enough of the food served at Parkway East Hospital. Contrary to popular belief about how bland hospital food can be, the dishes served seemed right out of a legit restaurant — lobster laksa or macarons, anyone?
What she ate: Cakes at Lady M
Yummy factor: It looks like more is more when it comes to desserts for Carrie. She had not one but three slices of cake, prompting Jeffrey Xu to ask if she’s actually able to finish them all.
What they ate: Bak chor mee
Yummy factor: Now that dining-in is allowed, both Yifeng and her daughter Eleanor decided to indulge in the simple pleasures of life at Simpang Bedok — think bowls of mee pok with plenty of liao (ingredients), fish dumpling soup and fried ngoh hiang.
What he ate: Carrot cake
Yummy factor: Too crowded to dine in? No problem for Hong Junyang and wife Candyce Toh, who got their steaming hot carrot cake to-go from 618 Sim Carrot Cake at Yishun, and had their delish lunch date (with lots of chilli) in the car instead. Hope the vehicle didn't smell of chai tow kway after that.
What he ate: Shrimp fried rice
Yummy factor: The Star Search 2019 finalist may not cook often, but he can certainly whip up a decent fried rice with shrimps and scrambled eggs — even if it means perspiring more than he would during a 10km run. And because he’s health-conscious, you can be sure he uses minimal oil.
What they ate: My Melody chiffon cake
Yummy factor: Fann got her hands on the My Melody Sweet Chiffon baking kit from Deco Chiffon Cakes, and it sure looks like she aced it. Isn’t the fluffy creation adorable?
What she ate: Mee hoon kuey
Yummy factor: When you can’t decided on the thickness of your noodles, or whether to go for the soup or dry version, take a leaf out of Jade’s book and have it all! She went for the jumbo prawn mee hoon kuey at China Whampoa Home Made Noodles, and clearly had no regrets ordering two bowls for herself.
What she ate: Chirashi cake
Yummy factor: Because wedding anniversaries are a perfect reason to have cake, Cheryl’s aunt, Dawn Yip, rose to the occasion and made her and hubby Roy Fong a unique chirashi version for their anniversary (Jul 1). For sushi lovers like themselves, devouring the cake must have been heaven — it’s practically a supersized California maki.
What he ate: Camou curry puffs
Yummy factor: Old Chang Kee sent Maxi a box of their camouflage-themed curry puffs — a one-day-only special for SAF Day on Jul 1 — and he couldn’t get over how cute they were. Don’t they remind you of Maxi’s role in Ah Boys to Men?
What she ate: Homecooked zi char feast
Yummy factor: It’s safe to say that Xiuhuan has showcased her culinary prowess for the mouthwatering dinner she prepared — there were at least eight dishes on the menu! Think Ding Tai Fung-style fried rice, salted egg prawns, flower crabs, drunken clams, and more. It’s no wonder everyone in the family was happy to dig in.
What she ate: Gyudon
Yummy factor: An ode to the first ever beef rice bowl she had at Yoshinoya back in the day, Rozz made an elevated version with ribeye, caramelised onions and onsen eggs. Itadakimasu!
What he ate: Prawn noodles
Yummy factor: Nothing’s stopping Terence from getting his fix of Penang-style prawn noodles, even if it means whipping it up himself from scratch. We can almost taste the umami in the hearty broth just by looking at it.
What they ate: Birthday dinner
Yummy factor: Phew... Now that we’re in Phase 2, at least Hong Ling managed to bring Nick out for an omakase dinner at Kyuu by Shunsui to celebrate his 30th birthday (Jun 28). There’s just something about uni, ikura, wagyu and grilled seafood that makes for a party in the mouth.
What she ate: Thin-crust pizza
Yummy factor: Yasminne made her own thin-crust pizza — albeit with a DIY kit and step-by-step instructions from Amo Restaurant — and it looked amazing with the sliced prosciutto ham, rockets and plenty of grated cheese.
What he ate: Japanese nosh
Yummy factor: What would you crave after fasting for days? Daniel joined his wife Fay Tan for a 60-hour fast, and the lovebirds celebrated the end of it with plenty of sushi, grilled tuna head meat and refreshing sake at Tomisushi. Yum!
What she ate: Comfort food
Yummy factor: From truffle fries to desserts and burgers the size of her palm, Yifeng was duly impressed by the offerings from PS Cafe’s sister brand, Popsup. If you’re keen, their menu items are only available for delivery.
What she ate: Boozy coffee chiffon cake
Yummy factor: Ever the avid baker, Jaime decided to experiment with her chiffon cake recipe, and tweaked it to include Kahlúa, a coffee liqueur. Her verdict? Great texture... but she’ll stick to citrusy flavours instead.
What she ate: Chirashi don
Yummy factor: It doesn’t take a lot to make Ya Hui happy — give her a bowl of Japanese short-grain rice topped with sashimi (think fresh tuna, salmon, and juicy ikura) and it’s enough to elicit a million-dollar smile from her.
What she ate: Hotpot and kueh salat
Yummy factor: Not only did Apple manage to have a feast at Haidilao, she also exchanged her keto bakes for homemade kueh salat by radio deejay Kelvin Loh. We're not sure if it’s keto-friendly, but the traditional snack sure looks yummy.
What she ate: Steak
Yummy factor: With such a sizable slab of steak on her plate, as well a huge baked potato and side of buttered corn, can Kimberly finish all of that? Nonetheless, it looks like a coma-inducing meal-for-one.
