Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Mar 27-Apr 3)

All the photos that made us hungry this week.

All the photos that made us hungry this week.

For the past week, our social media feed has been filled with creative home-cooked meals and treats from the celebs as everyone tries their best to #stayhome — even (not very) domestic goddesses like Tong Bingyu and Carrie Wong flexed their culinary muscles (and abs). As for JJ Lin and Tanya Chua, who are currently based overseas, we’re just glad they managed to satisfy their Singaporean taste buds... somewhat.

1 of 20 JJ Lin

What he ate: Bak kut teh

Yummy factor: A homesick JJ Lin got a taste of home at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh in Taiwan — of course he had to enjoy the peppery broth with prime ribs.

2 of 20 Justin Ang

What he ate: Yakiniku

Yummy factor: Justin absolutely enjoyed his sizzling grilled beef at Yakiniku Like, where he gushed about his karubi set that was priced at a reasonable $18 for 300g. Pair it with a generous portion of garlic butter like he did to be transported to yakiniku heaven.

3 of 20 Carrie Wong

What she ate: Fried eggs

Yummy factor: Stay-home Sundays are for whipping up a quick bite in the kitchen (fried eggs with onions for Carrie, in this instance), and holding on a hot dog.

4 of 20 Dennis Chew

What he ate: Zichar-inspired burgers

Yummy factor: Because Dennis is a strong advocate of #goodthingsmustshare, he took the chance to introduce Wok In Burger, a burger joint selling hearty creations (marmite chicken burger, anyone?) inspired by good ol’ zichar dishes at Keng Eng Kee Seafood, its famous sister resto.

5 of 20 Tracy Lee

What she ate: Egg tart

Yummy factor: Talk about creativity... Tracy made her own giant egg tart with simple ingredients, and used Spring Home’s instant prata as the base. All it took was 15 minutes of baking thereafter and voila — afternoon tea snack settled. We're so gonna try this!

6 of 20 Tanya Chua

What she ate: Chocolate chip cookies

Yummy factor: Not many can claim that they’ve been personally gifted cookies by a superstar, let alone munch on treats baked by one! Here’s Tanya unabashedly showing off her chocolate chip cookie loot from JJ Lin himself.

7 of 20 Vernetta Lopez

What she ate: Dominican empanadas

Yummy factor: Staying home has brought out Vernetta’s domestic goddess side for sure — check out the buttery Dominican-style empanadas she made from scratch, courtesy of De La Crème’s recipe. Plus points for being generous with the minced beef filling in these turnovers.

8 of 20 Nick Shen

What he ate: Laksa at Da Hua Rong Ji coffeeshop

Yummy factor: Love a solid laksa, but mindful of an expanding waistline? Take a (laksa) leaf out of Nick’s book and have yours with more bean sprouts — they’re high in iron and vitamin C — and skip the carbs!

9 of 20 Tong Bingyu

What she ate: Lobster pasta and scallop risotto

Yummy factor: Staying home doesn’t mean Bingyu has to give up her restaurant-worthy eats. Thanks to restos like Beta KL, as well as Skillet@163 in Kuala Lumpur, which now offers delivery of ingredients so folks can replicate recipes at home, Bingyu managed to indulge in some fine dining in the comfort of her own home, complete with bubbles and an intricately plated dessert.

10 of 20 Oon Shu An

What she ate: Satay

Yummy factor: Shu An made an effort to support local small businesses and had her fix of hawker-style nosh from Syifa’s Satay at Makansutra Gluttons Bay (psst, it's now available for delivery). And according to her, the tauhu telur was yummy too.

11 of 20 Priscelia Chan and Alan Tern

What they ate: Birthday meal

Yummy factor: Happy belated birthday, Alan! Priscelia’s hubby turned 44 on Mar 31 and they celebrated the day simply with plenty of comfort food — think pizza, fried chicken and more.

12 of 20 James Seah

What he ate: Room service

Yummy factor: Why head out when you can feast whilst dressed in fluffy robes and hats? Check out James and his fiancée Nicole Chang Min’s room service delivery at Oakwood Premier, where they celebrated their 5th anniversary with a staycay. We spy plenty of drinks to go round, as well as fancy plates like salted egg cod fish and chips, wagyu pan-seared foie gras beef burger and salmon salad.

13 of 20 Rebecca Lim

What she ate: Nasi lemak

Yummy factor: Mama Lim (Rebecca’s mummy dearest) got up bright and early to snag the best ikan selar at the market to cook nasi lemak for the Lims, even going as far to prep the sweet chilli sauce from scratch. And would you look at the golden-brown chicken drumsticks — they’re fried to perfection.

14 of 20 Michelle Wong

What she ate: Modern orh nee

Yummy factor: Inspired by cafes’ recent interpretations of orh nee, Michelle decided to put her own spin on the traditional yam paste dessert, using coconut cream to achieve a creamier consistency. It sure does look yummy and easy enough to achieve!

15 of 20 Yasminne Cheng

What she ate: Pandan chiffon cake

Yummy factor: Yasminne gave local bakery Old Seng Choong’s pandan cake a shot, and found the nostalgic confection to be light, fragrant and moist — the perfect accompaniment to a cup of kopi o kosong. And has anyone else noticed how pretty the packaging is?

16 of 20 Rosalyn Lee

What she ate: Heartwarming deliveries

Yummy factor: Rozz’s halfway through her stay-home notice and going strong, thanks to heartwarming deliveries from her pals. Aside from cooking her own meals for one, Rozz also got to satisfy her craving for chwee kueh from Tiong Bahru’s Jian Bo Shui Kueh, and even Janice Koh popped by to deliver homemade Nyonya chap chye, ayam bakar and bergedil.

17 of 20 Chen Ning

What she ate: Macarons

Yummy factor: Chen Ning indulged in these thick Korean-style fat-carons from Nanatang Bake House and Studio, with tantalising flavours like mango tango and azuki bean with Japanese matcha. But we have to say that the ondeh ondeh one she munched on looks exceptionally delish with the creamy coconut and gula melaka fillings.

18 of 20 Yvonne Lim

hat she ate: Marvel-ous cake

Yummy factor: Yvonne started her week with good vibes by baking the cutest dome-shaped cake for a little boy named Ethan. Isn’t it adorable how the sponge cake features a mish-mash of his favourite characters, including Iron Man and Spiderman?

19 of 20 Sora Ma

What she ate: Pickled mustard greens

Yummy factor: Cooking for herself isn’t a problem for Sora, who successfully replicated her mum’s recipe for pickled mustard greens, a favourite hometown dish of hers. She even jested that her mother can now retire in peace knowing that Sora’s a pro in the kitchen.

20 of 20 Chen Xiuhuan

What she ate: Salmon carbonara

Yummy factor: For the past two weeks, Xiuhuan has been busy cooking for her girls — Shalynn and Shanisse Tsai — who have been in self-quarantine in their rooms at home. To mark their last night of self-isolation, the veteran actress got fancy and whipped up this sinful plate of carbonara with grilled salmon. What a treat!
