Foodie Friday: What The Stars Ate This Week (Nov 13-20)
All the photos that made us hungry this week.
This week, Vivian Lai tried Li Nanxing's curry chicken, Thomas Ong checked out MasterChef Singapore alum Aaron Wong's newly-opened mee hoon kueh stall, and Joshua Tan pigged out on fried chicken with his fiancée Zoen Tay after their couple shoot. Read on for all the deets!
What she ate: Fried glutinous rice birthday cake
Yummy factor: Yup, and aside from the awesome savoury birthday “cake” topped with lup cheong prepared for Joanna by mummy dearest, there was also her favourite old-school layered jelly dessert, Korean-style grilled ribs, and stir-fried crabs, amongst others. Mummy Dong sure can cook!
What she ate: Curry chicken
Yummy factor: Vivian tried Li Nanxing's curry chicken and dried scallop hae bee hiam croissant, which are sold at Taste’s new takeaway bakery section, Bakers & Co, and was pleasantly surprised by how lemak the curry was. Well, it is made with ah ge's family heirloom recipe.
What he ate: Fried chicken
Yummy factor: There’s just something satisfying about watching Joshua and his fiancee Zoen Tay enjoying their Korean fried chicken with gloved hands at Chir Chir. Well, after watching their diet for a recent shoot, it’s time they relax a little and order some comfort food.
What he ate: Yakiniku
Yummy factor: Fancy having unlimited servings of grilled A5 wagyu? Well, meat-loving folks will want to heed Justin’s recommendation and head over to Syohachi Yakiniku for its Japanese wagyu buffet — you’ll be able have your fill of premium marbled cuts, as well as pork, chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetables grilled over an open flame like he did.
What she ate: Birthday cake
Yummy factor: Birthdays are meant to be celebrated for a whole month, right? Denise continued the festivities for her special day (Nov 6) with a seafood-centric high tea set featuring savoury canapés as well as oysters, mussels and prawns, and concluded her feasting sesh at Hilton Singapore with their fancy double chocolate cake.
What she ate: Otah bun
Yummy factor: Dawn had a simple, easy but shiok dinner — steamed otah buns from online store Chefcrackling, as well as the charcoal version. For those with larger appetites, the mildly spicy buns will make a great snack too.
What he ate: Hawker fare
Yummy factor: Can’t decide between fish ball noodles and laksa? Why not choose the healthier option, with less oil and fried elements? Andie has been on a quest to clean up his diet and reduce inflammation, and judging by the glow-up, it sure seems like he’s been making the right choices for his body.
What he ate: Mee hoon kueh
Yummy factor: Thomas paid a visit to MasterChef Singapore alum Aaron Wong’s newly-opened mee hoon kueh stall — Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway — at Telok Blangah Crescent Market & Food Centre, and was duly rewarded for his effort with the simple yet oh-so-satisfying dish. Fun fact: the dough used for the ban mian is hand-rolled upon order — no wonder it looks so springy in texture.
What they ate: French food
Yummy factor: When Patricia and Cynthia meet for a meal, it’s probably going to be a hearty one. Their three-course lunch at French bistro So France saw them having duck risotto and cod fish, both of which sound like they’d be rich and dense in flavour. Of course, they had to have ice cream for dessert too.
What she ate: Grilled steak
Yummy factor: Anyone else feeling hungry just looking at Kimberly’s juicy steak, served medium-rare, with a side of garlic cloves and sprig of rosemary for an aromatic touch? Well, you’re not alone.
What she ate: Dry laksa
Yummy factor: Xiuhuan makes it a point to cook something special for the fam during the weekends, and this time it's dry laksa. Safe to say, the humble dish has never looked more yummy, especially when it’s served on platters and accompanied by plenty of ingredients, including deshelled prawns and fresh cockles.
What they ate: Home-cooked fare
Yummy factor: Whilst working on a new project together, Vivian, Hong Ling and Guo Liang also got to share what looked like a home-cooked meal — with three dishes and a soup — for lunch. It may have been simple fare like a fried omelette, braised chicken and vegetables, but all three were seemingly pleased with the offerings.
What she ate: Log cake
Yummy factor: We’re not sure how Jean manages to maintain her svelte figure with her penchant for sweets – the girl sure can eat! Watch her attempt to demolish this chocolate caramel hazelnut log cake from Pan Pacific all by herself, one forkful at a time.
What he ate: “Dirt” dessert
Yummy factor: Imagine having to dig through dirt to get to your dessert... Well, Lee Teng did just that, except that he was shovelling up chocolate crumbs to get to layers of smooth mascarpone cream and coffee savoiardi biscuit — a unique presentation for tiramisu by online dessert store, Epilogue.
What she ate: Gluten-free dinner
Yummy factor: After a long day at work, Belinda decided to treat herself to a sumptuous gluten-free dinner with her husband at The Butcher’s Wife, where they had the wagyu picanha grilled just right, juicy stacked hamburger with thick-cut fries and the tastiest coconut pumpkin soup.
What she ate: Chilli crab noodles
Yummy factor: Although Hazelle tried three times and just couldn’t get the perfect molten lava egg, we gotta give it to her for her effort, and the accompanying chilli crab noodles she made (albeit with instant sauce) look like it’d make a delish snack.
What she ate: Durian-themed desserts
Yummy factor: Sora indulged in all things durian at Goodwood Park Hotel’s durian buffet, which features delectable desserts inspired by the king of fruits — think mao shan wang mini eclairs, Swiss rolls and mousse cake, as well as D24 coffee squares. As yummy as it sounds, we hope she drank plenty of water after.
What she ate: Christmas must-haves
Yummy factor: Isn’t it the most wonderful (and delicious) time of the year? Christmas came early for Jeanette, who has already gotten started on slicing up roast turkey, baked ham and fruit tarts for dessert.
What she ate: High tea
Yummy factor: Tay Ying had a sea-riously delish meal at Hilton Singapore, where her leisurely high tea sesh involved both seafood and bubbly. Think chilled seafood platter with Maine lobster, prawns and freshly-shucked oysters, cheese board, ocean-inspired canapes, desserts, and prosecco.
What she ate: Smoothie bowl
Yummy factor: Jade started her work week at 6 Letter Coffee, where she refueled with a healthy smoothie bowl topped with antioxidant-rich nuts, blueberries and strawberries. Now that should make up for all the sinful mala xiang guo and bak chor mee that she’ll be having later in the week, right?
