Irene Ang Reveals That Her Iconic Scene In Ah Boys To Men Was “Completely Unscripted”

Bet you didn’t know that.

If you’ve watched Jack Neo's 2012 comedy Ah Boys To Men (which landed on Netflix on June 1 BTW), you’d probably remember the scene where Irene Ang, who plays an overprotective mother, berates a MINDEF officer after her pampered son, recruit Ken Chow ( Joshua Tan), got hospitalised due to a self-inflicted heat injury.

In the event that you don't remember, here's the scene, courtesy of Irene, who posted it on her IG on June 7.

But did you know the scene was, according to Irene, completely unscripted ?

1 of 3 Mother, she wrote

According to the 51-year-old Fly Entertainment head honcho, she had finished filming her scenes for the day and had changed out of her clothes and was about to head to her car when the assistant producer of ABTM ran after her and asked if she had an hour to spare.

Turned out, director Jack wanted to “try something” out. He then told Irene to just “scold and scold from bottom to top”, demanding that the MINDEF officer explain to her how and why her son suffered from dehydration during training.

“Wah… No script…” Irene recalled. “Just scold freely ah? Okay lor!”

And so she did.

It only took the actress “two takes of non-stop scolding” to achieve what Jack was looking for.

“It has since become one of my most ridiculously memorable and fun scene[s]! I must say Jack Neo is a genius, Irene wrote, adding that the director is someone who takes initiative.

3 of 3 ABTM was the second most-watched show on Netflix in Singapore over the weekend

Her post struck a chord with her followers, with many of them praising Irene for her “natural” acting. They also thanked her for bringing back good memories about the show.

One fan wrote: “I really enjoyed your character in the film! Can’t tell that this was totally unscripted!”

So when will Netflix be releasing the rest of ABTM series?
