What happens when a young dance major and TikTok’s favourite dancing grandma get together?

Well, we got to see for ourselves when Star Search 2019 runner-up Herman Keh met up with veteran actress Jin Yinji to give her a dance lesson in the latest episode of bite-sized Mediacorp series #JustSwipeLah.

And yes, it was as cute as you might imagine.

“This is my first 75-year-old student,” said Herman, 25, a former Lasalle College of the Arts dance student, at the beginning of the video.

As it turns out, Jin-jie, whose utterly adorable appearances on her two helpers’ TikTok account have made her an online sensation at the ripe young age of 74 (she turns 75 on June 17), isn’t new to the world of dance.

She revealed that she started learning classical dance at the age of six, which probably explains her smooth moves and the fact that she’s still able to do the splits, much to Herman’s — and our — amazement.

“Find me someone who can do splits like you at the age of 74. You won’t be able to do it! If you can, I’ll treat you to a meal,” he exclaimed.

While Herman was the teacher and the one who choreographed the moves for the lesson, he hilariously kept forgetting his own dance steps. In fact, there were times when Jin-jie did a much better job at remembering them than him.

“He’s the best at coming up with excuses,” said Jin-jie, wagging a finger at Herman after he blamed his poor memory on muscle cramps and the “stuffy” air in the studio making it “a little hard to breathe”.

At the end of the little class, Herman and Jin-jie were asked to comment on each other’s performance.

Herman praised Jin-jie for being able to remember the dance moves, even though a lot of them were “quite complicated”, while Jin-jie, um, jokingly scrunched up her face in disapproval when asked how Herman was as a teacher.

“You must have a good grasp of your own dance moves and music before teaching others,” she said. “Don’t get mad, I’m just being straightforward.”

  • 4 of 5 Herman wasn’t angry and took her advice seriously

Despite Herman’s occasional forgetfulness, the lesson was generally a success and the duo showed off two cool dance numbers, with Jin-jie absolutely killing it.

“We only just met today and we kept practising for a few hours. We should give ourselves a thumbs-up,” said Jin-jie encouragingly.

Moving forward, Herman hopes to be the one learning a dance from Jin-jie. He also wants to play her grandson in a drama, which she happily agreed to.
