The Golden Horse Awards ceremony in Taipei is just around the corner — this Saturday, November 21, to be exact — and the feeling of being a Golden Horse Best Actor nominee is finally setting in for Mark Lee.

After celebrating his “release” from his 14-day quarantine on Monday (Nov 16), the actor, who received a nom for his role in Number 1, in which he plays a retrenched engineer who becomes a drag performer, dove straight back into work, embarking on a series of activities linked to the Golden Horse Awards.

During an interview with Apple Daily yesterday, the 51-year-old filmed a video about the unboxing of his Golden Horse swag bag. While the value of the gift bag was not revealed, the box, which reportedly weighs, wait for this, 20kg, was packed with 23 items ranging from snacks to sunglasses, beauty and skin care products to a, believe it or not, rice cooker.

According to Apple Daily, Mark was like a kid opening his presents on Christmas Day, grinning from ear to ear as he pulled out box after box. Then when he opened a booklet that contained his Golden Horse nomination certificate, he suddenly turned speechless.

Calling the cert priceless , Mark said: “This is a film maker’s dream.”

In fact, he was so touched he started tearing, which surprised his wife Catherine and his manager.

[The Golden Horse Awards committee] only issues five of these to the nominees [of each category] each year. No matter how hard you study or how much effort you put in, money can’t buy this. I'm very touched,” said Mark about his reaction.

“Next time, when I act in movies, I can [use this to] negotiate for a higher pay,” he said, flashing his cert. “ Jack Neo, please look at this. With this, I can ask for at least a 50 per cent increment. Really!”

The item that caught Mark's attention was of course the golden electric rice cooker, which had the Golden Horse logo emblazoned on it. And he was really impressed by the “symbolic meaning” behind the electrical appliance.

“During Chinese New Year, we give people golden chopsticks and bowls as a ‘golden bowl’ symbolises that you don’t worry about not having enough to eat. But this is a ‘golden rice cooker’, so not only do I have food every day, I can also share it with people around me,” said Mark.
