The World Vision ambassador, who is supporting a total of six kids, says that the trip was a heartwarming and touching experience “because of the love they showed us in return [of our support].”“But it also breaks my heart to see what the parents and children are going through,” adds Feli, who says that her passion for helping kids comes from losing her dad from stomach cancer at 17 (but more on this later).

Being compassionate isn’t the only reason we think the bubbly star is nice. Feli, who is currently filming upcoming Ch 8 drama, Dear Neighbours, alongside Kym Ng and Pierre Png, is also super thoughtful when it comes to the people around her. When we met Felicia on a Friday night for this interview, she suggested we do it at a quaint cafe at Paragon, because it was “quieter” which would help when we listen to the play back of this recording.“If people need help and if it’s within my means, then I will definitely help!” smiles Feli as she takes a sip from her piping hot cup of chamomile tea.

8 DAYS: Congratulations on becoming a mother! How did you get involved with World Vision?Felicia Chin: (Guffaws) I have five children in total! Four months ago, I was approached by World Vision and they asked if I wanted to sponsor a child with them. They presented six profiles to me. But because I didn’t want to pick and choose, I decided to just sponsor all of them. (Laughs) I remember Jeffrey telling me that he wanted to be a part of this, and so he chose Khant. (Laughs) So now we have a total of six kids from Myanmar, Jerusalem and Zambia.

How was it like meeting two of them in real life?I kept mispronouncing Kyin Kyin’s name! (Laughs) I remember when I first went to the village, I almost couldn’t recognise her because there were rows of kids waiting for us. But once I saw her, I hugged her and she immediately held my hand and brought me to her house to meet her mother. Kyin Kyin’s mother is a widow, and it saddens me to know that her mother has to struggle to make ends meet, and how the family can’t stay together because of poverty. She has a 13-year-old sibling that works in the city and another one who stays with their aunt. I don’t know if it’s legal work or not, but it’s upsetting to know that they’re forced to be separated at such a young age. You mentioned earlier that Kyin Kyin is fatherless. Do you feel like you can relate to her because you also lost your dad when you were young?Yeah. My dad passed on when I was 17, and my mum had to struggle a lot. At that time, I wished I had a father figure who would guide me in life. It wasn’t easy, so I wanted to take this chance to offer love care and support to these children and their families. All of my kids are fatherless, so I can relate to them in a sense when there’s brokenness and loss at a young age. I wish to give them affirmation and hope for their future. What do they want to be when they grow up?Kyin Kyin wants to be a teacher when she grows up, so I encouraged her mum to let her remain in school. What was the most memorable incident that happened during the trip?I came across this 50-year-old lady holding an old and tattered recyclable bag, and she was holding on to it with her dear life. She opened it for me when I asked her what was inside, and I saw a notebook. I opened the book, and realised that there were a lot of meticulously written words in it. I see dates, numbers… The translator told me that it was actually the information that she got about farming. She wrote down things like how to plant the seeds better, and when to harvest the different types of produce. It touched me because she’s trying so hard to do well in life. It’s just that they don’t have the opportunity to help themselves. There was also once I asked the farmers who were chosen to go for lessons if they felt stress to share their new skills. What have you learnt from this trip? I realised a lot of the children come from broken families. They are very simple people. When you ask them, “What do you want in life?” Kyin Kyin’s mother actually replied, “I don’t know”. She has no demands, and just hope to live day by day. On the other hand, Khant’s mother just replied that she wanted her son to have a better life.

Are you involved with other charities too?Aiyoh, don’t want to publicise lah. I will just say that I’ve donated financially to sick children in Singapore, went to the Philippines for social work, as well as sponsored other kids from a different organisation. I’m not doing this because I want to show that I have a big heart and stuff. Of course, I’ve always wanted to do good. But I realised that we should not procrastinate [doing acts of charity] because life’s short. If there’s a way within your means to make a difference in someone else’s life, you should just go and do it.

If we ever did a ranking of the nicest celebs (and we really should), Felicia Chin’s name would definitely be found on top of the list. And her recent trip to Myanmar just made us even surer of why she deserves a spot on top. For the past four-months, the 34-year-old has been sponsoring underprivileged children with World Vision Singapore and she recently took a four-day trip to a remote village in Myanmar to visit two of her kids, a seven-year-old girl named Kyin Kyin (pronounced as ‘Chan Chan’) and a 10-year-old boy called Yel Pone Khant, who is also sponsored by her boyfriend Jeffrey Xu.
