Anthony Wong says starring in this Cat III film helped him get over being bullied as a child
An unorthodox method, but it apparently worked for him.
Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong, who entered showbiz almost 40 years ago, has never shied away from expressing his opinion, be it about politics, or his childhood.
The 59-year-old, who was born to a British father and Hong Kong mother, has spoken before about being bullied as a child. According to Anthony, he was made the target of many bullies growing up due to his mixed heritage. To make matters worse, his father left Hong Kong when the actor was only four, essentially abandoning Anthony and his mother.
As a result, Anthony and his mother, who worked multiple jobs to keep them afloat, had to live in poverty for most of his childhood.
When he was old enough to go to school, Anthony was sent away to boarding school, where he was the victim of severe bullying.
Anthony revealed that there was an incident where he was forced to strip naked and stand in the middle of the school’s playground by his tormentors. The ordeal scarred Anthony so badly that he “had nightmares about it for over 10 years”. And in these nightmares, just like in real life, Anthony was left naked, with no way to return home.
But, it appears that he was able to get over this childhood trauma with a very unorthodox method — starring in the racy Category III film, Erotic Ghost Story Ⅱ, which was released in 1991.
In the movie, there was a scene that required Anthony to “relive his childhood trauma” by acting in his birthday suit.
And for some reason, that was all it took for Anthony to shed the psychological burden that he had been bearing for so many years.
“If I didn’t become an actor, I’m afraid I would’ve become a pervert,” Anthony laughed, when recounting this experience.
Looks like everything worked out fine for the actor, then.
