Back in 2018, reports of Hongkong actress Bernice Liu, 41, marrying into money surfaced after she went public with her then-boyfriend. And her beau wasn’t just rich, but rich rich. Businessman Calvin Lo, 42, is said to have a net worth of HK$13.1bil (S$2.26bil) and owns private jets, super sports cars, properties and more. Calvin’s family is reported to deal in insurance, wine, along with other industries.
Bernice had confirmed the dating rumours then by gushing about how well he treated her, but her happiness was short-lived when reports of him dating the daughter of a Thai telecommunications company emerged. Bernice was accused of being the third party in their relationship as the media said that Calvin and the unnamed lady had been dating for seven years before Bernice came into the picture. The actress is said to have dumped him after that, especially as she faced accusations of being a “home wrecker coming between a couple planning to get married”.
Fast forward to 2020 this week, when the CEO of a real estate company posted a congratulatory message on Instagram Stories for Calvin and Bernice, wishing them well for a wedding which he claimed will happen next March. The media went wild, wondering when the former couple got back together and the circumstances behind the imminent nuptials. The flames were fanned further by Bernice’s response to the speculation: “No comment”.
They took the lack of denial as implicit confirmation. Meanwhile, netizens claiming to be close to the couple referred to “exotic locations” and an “amazing guest list” that were a part of the wedding.
But while Bernice was reticent, Calvin was more explicit by denying the rumours outright. “I don’t know how this rumour even started,” the businessman said. “I’ve known Bernice for years and she’s one of my best friends. Our group of friends often meet up to chat and enjoy good wine together.”
