Would you pay good money for a towel that your idol has used? If your answer is yes, then there’s a hotel in China that’s just right for you.

The Movenpick Hotel Enshi in Hubei came under fire from netizens after it ran an ad asking potential guests to bid for a one night’s stay in a garden suite that Hongkong singer Karen Mok had slept in when she was in the city for a concert. The tagline for the ad? “Goddess Mok has left Enshi but her warmth and smell still lingers and it’s waiting for you tonight.”

That’s not all, the ad also stated that the winner of the bid can take home “all the bedding, except the mattress” that “the goddess” had slept on during her recent stay. Also part of the package are the towels and toiletries that Karen used.

The starting bid for the package was set at 8,800 yuan (S$1,706) with each new bid to be raised by 500 yuan.

Though it’s not known how many people had actually put in bids for the suite, netizens who saw the ad quickly slammed the stunt as an invasion of privacy and for being downright creepy. Karen’s team has also criticised the hotel for its actions, saying that the incident has damaged the singer’s reputation.

The five-star hotel has since released a statement apologising for “the bad social influence created by the incident”. They also admitted that the ad was of bad taste and a result of bad judgement by its marketing team. It was also reported that the hotel has been fined an undisclosed amount by the authorities.

Guess the only smell that’s lingering now is the smell of shame.
