Chinese Actress Xu Jiao: CJ7 Director Stephen Chow Asked Mum To Hit Me For Crying Scene
She was only 10 when Stephen Chow cast her in her first movie role, and couldn’t cry on cue.
23-year-old actress Xu Jiao, who made her movie debut in 2008 with Stephen Chow’s film CJ7, shared in a recent interview that making the movie was traumatic for her.
She was 10 at the time and played CJ7’s lead character, a boy named Dicky. In the show, Dicky was bullied by his classmates and had to deal with the death of his alien friend. The emotional challenge of portraying such a character proved daunting for Xu Jiao, who had no acting experience.
The Chinese actress admitted, “Filming CJ7 was a traumatic experience for me. [Stephen Chow] was very strict and each scene would be filmed 20 to 30 times on average. After the three months of filming, I thought the torture was over, but then I was called to the recording studio to dub the movie.”
Xu Jiao continued, “Dubbing is a very difficult process, especially for a 10-year-old. I wasn’t able to cry on cue during filming, and Director Chow asked my mum to come on set to hit me. That’s how we managed to film the scene. I don’t know how I managed to survive dubbing as well.”
The actress also said that netizens have remarked that her debut film is the best project she’s ever worked on. She shared, “It’s no surprise that they think that way because I’ve never met a director as strict as Director Chow. Being able to work with him is the luckiest thing that has happened to me.”
