But if you want to bump into Chow Yun Fat, you have better luck staking out train and bus stations, discount stores and roadside stalls. The screen icon was also once seen out and about wearing a $20 T-shirt and flip-flops that cost $3. When asked about it, he simply said, “I don’t dress for others, what matters most is that I feel comfortable.”

Not too long ago, Fat-Gor was asked on a talkshow about the type of mobile phone he was using. Without hesitation, he answered: “Nokia” And that it was a first generation Nokia. His wife later on revealed that he had used the phone for 17 years and that he only switched to a smart phone some years later when it became unrepairable. “Actually, we don’t always have to have the latest news or information, what we need is to learn how to listen to the sound of our heart,” he said.

According to Jasmine Tan, his Singaporean wife of 32 years, Yun Fat’s monthly expenses add up to only HK$800 (S$141). Unsurprising, given his love for cheap clothes, street food and public transport. It also means he has amassed a massive fortune over the years, a number his wife once hinted was over $250mil. And guess what, he plans to donate his entire fortune to charity. “This money isn’t mine, I’m only safekeeping it for now,” he once said. He has already set up a foundation to help the needy. “The goal of the foundation is to help those who really need help,” said Jasmine. “My dream is to be happy and ordinary person. The toughest thing in life is not how much money you make but how you keep a peaceful heart, to lead a simple and happy life,” Yun Fat once said.
