It’s not an easy time for Chow Yun Fat, who laid his mother to rest just two days after his Project Gutenberg co-star Aaron Kwok said his final goodbyes to his own mum. But life goes on for the 64-year-old screen legend, who is affectionately known as 'Fat Gor' or 'Big Brother Fat'.

According to Hongkong media reports, Fat Gor’s mum, Chan Lai Fong, passed away in her sleep on February 13 at the ripe old age of 98. His wife Jasmine Tan confirmed that a simple funeral was held on the morning of March 7 with only close relatives in attendance. The low-profile affair was in line with Fat Gor’s low-key nature and his mother’s wishes, as well as prevention measures against the current COVID-19 outbreak.

Fat Gor's mother was then cremated, and her remains will be sent to their family home on Lamma Island.

Jasmine, who is Singaporean, also assured everyone that Fat Gor is doing well, and that they were both mentally prepared as his mother was suffering from some health issues due to her advanced age, and her condition had worsened in recent years.

“She went to bed after having dinner and was unresponsive when a domestic helper went to check up on her,” Jasmine recalled. “It’s actually a blessing that she left so peacefully!”

It’s nice to see that Fat Gor getting back to his usual routine so quickly. At about 10.30am yesterday (Mar 8), just a day after burying his mother, the movie icon was spotted shopping for food on the streets of Kowloon after indulging in his favourite hobby — hiking — with a bunch of his celeb pals, including Michelle Yim, Liu Kai Chi, and Michael Ning. His “spoils” included egg tarts, prawn noodles, bread, and other dried goods.

When contacted by Hongkong’s Apple Daily for an interview, Kai Chi shared that while it’s inevitable that Fat Gor would be affected by his mum’s death, he's comforted by the fact that she passed away in her sleep and that she was blessed to live such a long life.

Kai Chi added that the gang has been hiking more frequently in the midst of the outbreak — presumably because they have more free time as a lot of projects have been put on hold — but they would usually go to places with less people.
