Every couple of days, netizens and their fat-shaming comments take centrestage as they impose unreasonably high standards of beauty on celebs.

The most recent target was Fan Bingbing. Screen captures of her at a commercial shoot made the rounds online, in which the 39-year-old wore a form-fitting white dress that showed a slight tummy bulge.

Nasty comments attacking Bingbing flooded Weibo, as one wrote, “How could she get this fat? She looks pregnant.” Other netizens commented in response, “Baby bumps don’t look like that. This is obviously the result of her pigging out”, and the even more ridiculous “Baby bumps look more defined than what Bingbing has. She’s old now, so her tummy is sagging. Shouldn’t she manage herself better?”

Instead of ignoring the comments or getting defensive about them, the star found a cool and self-deprecating way to deal with trolls. Bingbing posted a response on her own Weibo account, attaching a screenshot of the video and quipped, “Thankfully, my face is still as slim as ever.”

Level-headed netizens left plenty of encouraging remarks on Bingbing’s post, with one declaring, “Why do people assume that celebs aren’t human? They age just like the rest of us. What’s the big deal about her putting on a bit of weight?” Another remarked, “Everyone puts on weight during winter. If [Bingbing] feels like it, she can hit the gym and have a bikini shoot during the summer. That will put them in their place.”
