“He Is No Longer Suffering”: Sammi Cheng Bids Farewell To 15-Year-Old Pet Dog

Sobs.

Cantopop diva Sammi Cheng took to her socials yesterday (Oct 7) to share that her beloved pet dog Lucky has been cremated after passing away peacefully at home recently. While it’s unclear when exactly he crossed the rainbow bridge, she apologised for not informing everyone sooner as she wanted to give herself some space to adjust and quietly make the cremation arrangements.

“[Lucky] had such a considerate heart. It was as if he wanted to let me finish all my work in September before officially saying goodbye,” she wrote in her lengthy tribute.

After thanking the staff at the Happy Valley Veterinary Clinic for their care, Sammi revealed that Lucky’s health started to deteriorate some time in June. “His physical condition was going downhill, but his eyes were still full of vitality, and his gradual paralysis could not stop his eternal curiosity about everything in the house.”

Fortunately, ‘cos of the pandemic, she and her husband, Hongkong singer-actor Andy Hui, were able to spend all their time at home to accompany and care for their German Shepherd, who was 15 years old.

“After Lucky left, I didn’t tell anybody. When it happened, there was an unspeakable sadness and sense of loss in my heart. Being mentally prepared that he would leave one day did nothing to reduce the pain of saying goodbye,” she continued. “Now, I will think on the bright side. He is no longer suffering and is finally free.”

Sammi went on to share the heart-breaking scenes that unfolded during Lucky’s funeral. “On the night of Lucky’s death, we contacted the pet funeral company to come and take him away. When Andy carried Lucky into the box provided by the funeral company, we and the staff couldn’t help but to cry.”

By the time she and Andy arrived at the pet funeral company, it was already 1am. “Lucky was lying inside a box and looked like a sleeping child at first glance. At that moment, I thought, ‘It would be great if he were really just asleep. How wonderful it would be if he could come back to life.’ But we only get to live once. Our Heavenly Father has already given us and Lucky the best 15 years.”

On the day of Lucky’s cremation, the couple got to spend half an hour alone with their precious fur kid before the process. “Lucky was lying on a small wooden bed, motionless and calm. We kept petting his frozen body, unwilling to let go. Suddenly, a thought occurred to me that one day, I will also be lying there like this, quietly accepting the tears and sadness of the living. Death is inevitable.”

Sammi herself tearfully pushed the button to activate the cremation furnace while hoping that Lucky will be happy in heaven. When it was done, they carefully brought Lucky’s ashes home, where he will continue to stay.

Concluding her post with a few hashtags, the 48-year-old wrote, “Thank you all for letting me remember Lucky with such a long post”, “Missing [someone] is painful”, “Lucky likes it when I’m happy and positive”, and “Although I’m a little frustrated and tired these days, I promised Lucky that I would get better soon”.

Andy’s tribute was shorter and simpler. The 53-year-old posted a photo of him walking Lucky that was taken from behind, along with the caption, “Lucky, I love you. Thank you.”
