Hebe Tien’s Former Label Is Demanding Compensation From The Singer As They Hold The Rights To 16 Songs She Sang At Her September Concert

This might get messy.

The three ladies of S.H.E parted ways with their longtime label, HIM International Music, in 2018 when their respective contracts with the company ended. Selina Jen, Hebe Tien and Ella Chen were with HIM for 17 years, and the company reportedly trademarked the group’s name years ago.

This raised questions on whether the ladies would still be able to perform as a S.H.E as HIM also owns the rights to all the songs the trio released while they were with the company. While no details have been released to the public, they were believed to have come to an understanding, and there were no issues with copyright… Until now.

According to reports, Hebe has received a letter from HIM asking her to compensate them for an undisclosed amount of money. Their reason? They hold the rights to 16 out of the 25 songs that she sang at her September concert. The letter states that Hebe was supposed to ask HIM for permission to sing those songs before performing them, and that her failure to do so constitutes as copyright infringement.

The singer has expressed her surprise at receiving the letter and her management has released a statement to address the issue. “We respect all copyright matters. We have received permission to perform the songs prior to the event,” they wrote, without delving into further details.

HIM then responded with: “Hebe Tien, her company and the concert organisers did not follow the proper procedures [to perform those 16 songs] during the concert. We request for an explanation from both the singer and the event organisers.”

Industry insiders shared that the process is often a tedious one. For last year’s Golden Melody Awards, the organisers are said to have taken weeks to negotiate the rights with HIM for S.H.E to perform at the show.
