She’s known as one of the most fashionable women in the world and luxury brands fall all over themselves to dress her. But Maggie Cheung is no fashion snob and has no qualms wearing brands of a more, um, rustic nature.

The screen and fashion icon was recently seen shopping up a storm at a street market in Hongkong, blissfully unconcerned about getting recognised. According to Next Magazine, after getting off her car, Maggie headed straight for a stall selling shoes and ended up buying three pairs in total. The reporter who spotted the star noted that a pair of shoes at the stall costs between HK$19 (S$3) to HK$50 (S$9).

But hey, it's not the first time that Hongkong stars have been spotted being frugal. Remember Chow Yun Fat and Anita Yuen?

Maggie then moved on to a lingerie stall where the reporter noted that the star was very focused and “had an interest in light-coloured bras, especially wireless nude bras.” She was also seen picking up a bra top to see if it matched the pants she was wearing. The stall owner would later tell the Next Magazine journo that Maggie is her regular customer and that the star buys a number of bras on each visit, sometimes even up to six bras.

It’s been said that Maggie is not at all brand conscious and she’s revealed in interviews that she has a habit of removing the labels from her clothes because she doesn’t want to know what brand she is wearing. Apparently, as long as she looks good in it, nothing else matters to the star.

But it’s not as if Maggie has fallen on hard times or that she can’t afford expensive clothes. Even though she has long retired from acting, and only makes very, very rare public appearances, Maggie’s not short on money. She’s reportedly owns HK$150mil (S$23mil) worth of real estate, including five units of a luxury condo worth HK$90mil (S$15mil), of which four units she had paid for... in cash. She also owns a Repulse Bay mansion that’s reportedly worth HK$60mil (S$10.5mil) as well as a factory that she invested in with famed Hongkong film editor and costume designer William Chan Suk Ping.

Maybe shopping for cheap bras is how the rich get richer?
