After TVB stars Kenneth Ma and Roxanne Tong went public with their romance over the weekend, all eyes turned to Natalie Tong — whom Kenneth was rumoured to be dating ever since his dramatic split from Jacqueline Wong — to see how she would react.

The first thing to come under scrutiny was, of course, her social media postings. After the news broke, Natalie posted a picture of a Buddhist statue on her Instagram Stories with the caption, “Everything is bound together by fate, so be gentle with your thoughts and be careful with your words and deeds.”

Naturally, everyone started assuming that her quote had something to do with Kenneth, but the 39-year-old actress didn’t seem too pleased with the connection and retaliated with another update, writing, “Even wanting to talk about life and Buddhism can turn into another matter entirely. Once again, the story you’ve made up has become my story?! I can ignore this, but you shouldn’t take it for granted.”

Another matter that fanned the flames of the “Natalie is upset” narrative was the fact that she did not ‘like’ or comment on Kenneth’s announcement post despite following him on Instagram (as we’ve said before, social media activity is often taken as a major indicator of celebrity relationships these days).

Natalie had the chance to personally address this when she spoke to reporters on the set of her new drama at TVB City yesterday (Jun 14), and once again, she didn’t seem amused by the speculations.

“Everyone is too influenced by social media nowadays,” she said. “Kevin Cheng started his Instagram account two years ago and I have not ‘liked’ anything on it since then. I don’t ‘like’ everything that Priscilla Wong posts. I don’t interact with 70 per cent of my friends on social media. What is a ‘like’ supposed to mean? It’s a happy piece of news, but don’t make something out of nothing, and don’t use social media to judge something ‘cos it’s too superficial.”

Natalie also explained that she shared the Buddhist passage ‘cos she found it meaningful, and stressed that it had nothing to do with Kenneth. When asked if she had congratulated him, she said of course she did.

“I’m happy ‘cos many good things have happened lately,” she gushed. “Jazz [Lam] became a father, Kevin has a second child on the way, and [Kenneth] is finally dating again. The next one should be [TVB actor] Stephen [Wong], and then it’ll be my turn.”

However, don’t count on her going public with her future beau like Kenneth and Roxanne did. According to Natalie, she would prefer to keep her love life as low-key as possible.
