Roxanne Tong Doesn’t Foresee Marrying Kenneth Ma So Soon As She Doesn’t Want Her Debt To Become Her "Dowry"

Shortly after Hongkong actors Kenneth Ma and Roxanne Tong went public with their relationship last June, rumours started swirling that they were getting married. Despite repeated denials, the latest on the grapevine is that they’re planning August nuptials. There was even talk that Roxanne’s new luxury Mid-Levels home, which she reportedly splashed a whopping HK$50mil (S$8.6mil), would be their love nest.

Alas, like all the other wedding rumours before this, this is not true.

The 33-year-old actress said in a recent interview that not only is there no such thing as an “August wedding”, she will not be getting married anytime soon as they haven’t been dating that long.

However, she was quick to emphasise that the problem lies with her, and not her beau. I am an insecure person. I need a long time for communication before making major life decisions. I don't want to think about [marriage] yet. Right now, what makes me feel most insecure is the home mortgage.”

Roxanne, whose dad is former actor Tong Chun Chung, revealed that when she was studying abroad, it was a huge financial burden on her family. Now that she is working, she wants to repay her parents by helping with the mortgage.

I just bought the property, so I’m under a lot of pressure. But this is all part of growing up and I have to shoulder [the burden]. I want to take care of my family first,” she said, adding that if it weren’t for her, her dad would have retired.

Although she will only start making payments five years later, it will be a five-figure sum each month so she has start saving now. She also doesn’t want Kenneth, 46, to take on the mortgage as she does not wish for the debt to become her “dowry”.

Though Roxanne’s showbiz pals have praised her for being a filial daughter, she admitted that she has “low EQ” and a short fuse with her mum.

“There isn’t a woman who has not lost her temper. Especially when it comes to my mother, we just clash. But I will cry when I am about to fight with my mother. She is one person that makes me lose control emotionally,” she said.

Roxanne and Kenneth began dating last April after he split from actress Jacqueline Wong, who was caught making out with Sammi Cheng’s husband Andy Hui in the back of a car.
