The past few weeks have been very difficult for Hongkong pop diva Sammi Cheng. Her beloved pet dog Lucky passed away earlier this month and two days after he was cremated, her father, who is over 80 years old, fell ill and was admitted to hospital.

Yesterday (Oct 25), Sammi took to Instagram to share a lengthy and emo post about how it has been a blissful task” taking care of her dad in hospital for 11 days.

Though Sammi did not reveal what her dad was sick with, the 47-year-old, who is very close to her parents, said she was frantic when she heard that he had been admitted to hospital.

“I was supposed to go to the dentist for a tooth extraction but when my elder sister told me that my dad was hospitalised, I immediately rushed to my parents' place,” she wrote.

As her elderly father is at higher risk of contracting COVID-19, she and her siblings took turns accompanying him at the hospital, even keeping vigil overnight. Even though Sammi's a night owl, she admitted that it was tiring to have to stay up till 6am.

“But being able to accompany and encourage him, hold his hand when he was most uncomfortable, pray and face [the difficulties] together is also a blissful task. Companionship is a placebo in itself,” said Sammi.

As her dad was not used to having strangers bathe him, her younger brother would bathe him every night at the hospital. She recalled how she would sometimes stand outside the bathroom and listen in on their conversation, which was “quite interesting and heartwarming”.

“They would talk about a wide range of topics, from our hometown in Chaozhou to antiques to the stock market. A 40-year-old son bathing his 80-year-old father as they chatted about endless topics… I was so touched that tears welled up my eyes. I see a kind of happiness in illness. This is love,” she said.

She revealed that her father was discharged a few days ago and took the opportunity to thank the medical staff for their patience and care.

She also thanked her siblings for their dedication and lamented that it has not been easy for her mum to take care of her dad, who suffered a stroke in 2017. She also encouraged those who are caring for their elderly parents to push on: “You are not alone. Let’s push on together.”
