Hongkong actor Simon Yam owns so much real estate in different cities around the world that he’s been dubbed the ‘King of Property’ and even needs wealth managers to help him handle his investments.

He’s also rumoured to have a net worth of at least NT$2bil (S$95mil), but as recent events have shown, he’s still a very down-to-earth guy.

On Tuesday (Mar 16), a netizen posted a video of Simon having a meal at a roadside stall — not exactly a place we would expect to find a celeb of his stature (then again, we’ve read about Maggie Cheung shopping at a street market, Chow Yun Fat taking public transport, and Louis Koo opting to fly economy).

1 of 4 Simon says: Be nice and humble

Simon, who turns 66 on March 19, was described as being very “unpretentious” and even happily greeted the crowd that had gathered around him once they realised who he was.

Now if it were us, we’d probably be a lot more wary of strangers after getting stabbed at a public event, but there he was, chatting away happily and looking very comfortable with his new friends.

He was even overheard saying with a laugh, “I’m afraid nobody will want to watch me if I were to continue acting for another 10 years”, impressing everyone with how approachable he is.

So what was a top celeb like Simon having for lunch in such a humble place?

Well, as shown in the video, he was munching on a simple plate of lu rou fan (or Taiwanese braised pork rice) and some green vegetables.

“I’m surprised to see such a big superstar eating the same thing as me,” read one comment.

Something else that caught everyone's attention was the cap he was wearing.

According to eagle-eyed internet sleuths (who are probably also avid online shoppers), the cap retails for just 53 yuan (about S$11), a fashion choice that garnered Simon praise for being so “grounded”.

Simon once revealed in an interview that he “finds the greatest joy in buying houses”. He said that whenever he visits a new country for work, the first thing he does is to get a local map and begin figuring out where are the best areas to purchase property for maximum profit.

Over the years, he has reportedly amassed over 30 properties in prime locations across various cities. His wife, supermodel Qi Qi, previously explained that he’s doing it all so that their daughter, 16-year-old Ella, can have a better life.
